Experiments with water

WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?

WE NEED:

- a glass

- a tissue

- a bowl with water

A popular experiment that shows that air takes up space and can prevent a tissue from getting wet, even when a glass is submerged in water.

When you turn a glass upside down and immerse it in water, the air in the glass gets trapped and prevents water from entering.

An experiment with the fire

What do you need:

- a candle

- an empty glass or jar

- a fire

The candle in a glass experiment involves observing how a candle flame consumes the oxygen under the glass, causing the candle to go out and the water level to rise.

This demonstrates that combustion requires oxygen, and that once the oxygen is used up, the flame goes out and the pressure in the glass drops, causing the water to be sucked in.

1. Solar Oven

What you need:

Pizza box or shoebox

Aluminum foil

Plastic wrap (e.g., kitchen film)

Black paper

Glue, scissors

Chocolate or marshmallows

Place chocolate inside and observe how it melts under sunlight.

2. Paper Windmill

What you need:

Cardstock or thick paper

Straw or pencil

Push pin

Scissors

What it shows: How wind (air’s kinetic energy) can spin blades to create motion.

Extension: You can connect the windmill to a small motor to generate electricity!

Students add the marker made from red cabbage and realize that our ingredients change colours. The ingrendients that turned to red are acids and the other ones (green and blue) are bases.

In collaboration with the Science United Project

Through their own constructions, the children understood the function of the Hovercraft: a layer of air is created underneath to hover, and a push from behind to move. Finally, a discussion and a reflection developed why this vehicle technology, which is has many advantages, has not been generalized? The most important fact of our meeting was that the children had a lot of fun!
