Water is the source of life... Yet while we consume it, it silently warns us. The Call of the Sea is a collaborative story written by students who chose to listen to that silent warning. Within the scope of the CLEAN project, young people from different countries came together on a creative journey to explore threats to aquatic ecosystems, the protection of biodiversity, and the path toward sustainable living.
This book is not just a story; it is a powerful call from the water guardians of the future. As you read, you are invited to become part of this call.

It was a warm spring day. Nerida, Kai, and Poseidon were walking along the shore when they noticed something shining on the beach. Poseidon immediately bent down and picked up an old glass bottle half-buried in the sand. Inside, there was a tightly rolled piece of paper.
"Could this be a treasure map?" Kai
asked excitedly. Nerida carefully
opened the bottle, took out the paper,
and began to read aloud:
Chapter 1: The Mysterious Message
"Help us! Our ocean is in danger. Our waters are being polluted, our homes are being destroyed. If we don’t act now, it will be too late. Please hear us!"
The children paused for a moment. Was this a joke, or was someone really asking for help?
"What is this?" Poseidon asked, looking at Nerida in confusion.
Just then, a small wave rose from the sea and gently pushed the bottle back toward their feet. It was as if the water was trying to tell them something.
Nerida narrowed her eyes and examined the paper again. At the bottom, there was a starfish symbol.
"Maybe we need to find out who sent this message," Kai said curiously.
Poseidon nodded. "But how?"

At that moment, an idea flashed in Nerida’s mind—Dr. Blue!
Dr. Blue was the town’s marine biologist and environmental scientist. The children knew him well because he often visited their school to teach about marine life and ecosystems. In fact, last year, all three of them had participated in his project called "Guardians of the Ocean."
Nerida spoke excitedly, "Do you remember? Last year, we went to his laboratory. He taught us how to protect sea creatures. If anyone can help us, it's Dr. Blue!"
Kai and Poseidon nodded in agreement.
"Let’s go to him right away!" Poseidon said.
The children, determined to uncover the mystery behind the message from the sea, rushed toward Dr. Blue’s laboratory.

Nerida, Kai and Poseidon walked quickly toward Dr. Blue’s laboratory. The lab was a few streets away from the shore, nestled in a small cove. The small white-walled building had a blue roof and was decorated with seashells and wave patterns. The sign above the door was familiar: "Marine Research and Ecosystem Laboratory."
As they opened the door and stepped inside, everything looked just as they remembered. Glass jars filled with seashells lined the shelves, plankton samples were being examined under microscopes, and a large aquarium housed small marine creatures. Every corner of the lab reflected the fascinating world of marine science.
Dr. Blue was studying images of sea creatures on a large screen. When he saw the three children, he smiled.
"Ah, my young ocean guardians! Welcome. What have you brought me today?"
Nerida quickly handed him the bottle. "We found this on the beach. There’s a very strange message inside."

Dr. Blue examined the paper carefully. "A starfish symbol... This is very interesting! We need to find out where this message came from."
Kai leaned in curiously. "This isn’t a joke, is it?"
Dr. Blue shook his head. "No, this is no joke. The marine ecosystem is truly in great danger. But we need to understand who sent this message."
Meanwhile, Poseidon was looking through the old maritime maps in the corner of the lab.
Suddenly, he shouted excitedly, "Look! This map has the same starfish symbol!"
Dr. Blue rushed over and examined the map. In one corner, the words "Coral Kingdom" were written. "This is it! This place is one of the most delicate ecosystems in the ocean. Coral reefs are home to countless marine creatures. If a call for help came from there, then this is a very serious matter."
Nerida asked curiously, "But how do we get there?"

Dr. Blue smiled slightly and pointed to a small submarine behind the glass wall. "This special submarine, called the ‘Ocean Guardian,’ is designed to dive into the deep sea. If you’re ready to uncover this mystery, I’m coming with you to the Coral Kingdom."
The children’s eyes sparkled with excitement. "Really?!" Kai asked eagerly.
Dr. Blue nodded. "But this journey won’t be easy. We don’t know what we’ll encounter in the deep ocean. You must be brave."
Nerida stepped forward with determination. "We’re ready!"
Poseidon and Kai nodded firmly.
Dr. Blue pressed a button, and the submarine doors opened. The children had taken their first step toward uncovering the secrets of the deep sea...

Chapter 3:Coral Kingdom
Inside the small submarine they had named the Ocean Guardian, Nerida, Summer, Aegean, and Dr. Blue focused intently on the screen in front of them. Dr. Blue, who was handling the controls, pressed a button, and they slowly began their descent into the water. As they peered through the glass walls of the submarine, the deep blue abyss unfolded before them. It was their first-ever deep-sea journey, and excitement coursed through them. Gradually, the sunlight faded, and they found themselves surrounded by glowing jellyfish, vibrant fish, and towering underwater plants swaying with the currents.Nerida was mesmerized. "This is incredible!" she whispered. Summer, however, had her eyes fixed on a massive sea turtle swimming gracefully nearby. "It’s so big! How old do you think it is?" Dr. Blue smiled. "Sea turtles can live for a very long time. Some of them reach up to 100 years old."

But just a few minutes later, they noticed a drastic change in their surroundings. The water grew murky, plastic bags floated aimlessly, and some of the corals had lost theircolors—some had even turned completely white.
Aegean asked worriedly, "What’s happening? Why do the corals look like that?"
Dr. Blue’s expression turned serious. "This is coral bleaching. Rising ocean temperaturesand pollution cause corals to lose their color and eventually die."
Just then, Nerida spotted something glowing on the ocean floor. "There’s something downthere!" she shouted.

When they switched on the submarine’s lights, a giant jellyfish appeared in front of amassive coral formation. But this was no ordinary jellyfish. A familiar starfish symbol glowedon its body.
The jellyfish slowly drifted upward, its bioluminescent glow pulsing as if it were trying tocommunicate with them.
Dr. Blue held his breath. "This... this is extraordinary! I think this is the one who sent us the message!"
At that moment, a deep, melodic voice echoed through the submarine’s speakers:
"Welcome, human friends. The Coral Kingdom has been waiting for you."
Chapter 4: Plastic Monster
Everyone inside the submarine held their breath. A talking jellyfish? How was that possible?
Summer whispered, "Is... is it really talking to us?"
Dr. Blue's eyes widened in surprise, but he quickly regained his composure. "I think it's communicating through light waves. Some marine creatures use sound waves and light signals to interact. It must have found a way for us to understand its message."
The jellyfish pulsed its lights once more, and a deep, melodic voice echoed through the speakers:
"We need your help. The Coral Kingdom is in danger."
Nerida immediately stepped forward. "What happened? Who is harming you?"
The jellyfish slowly moved back, and suddenly, a massive, dark shadow appeared in front of them. As the submarine's lights illuminated the scene, the children couldn’t believe their eyes.

At the bottom of the ocean lay a huge pile of plastic waste!
Old fishing nets, plastic bags, water bottles, and unidentified debris had tangled together, forming an enormous floating garbage mass. The corals were trapped within the waste, and many marine creatures were struggling to escape from the plastic entanglement.
Aegean clenched his fists in anger. "This is awful! How could people dump so much trash here?"
The jellyfish's voice trembled. "The Plastic Monster... it grows larger every day. Carried by the wind and ocean currents, the waste is suffocating us."
Summer suddenly spotted movement in the distance. "Someone needs help!"
Right in front of the submarine, a tiny seahorse was trapped inside a floating plastic bag, struggling desperately to break free!
"We have to help it—now!" Nerida shouted.
Dr. Blue quickly maneuvered the submarine's robotic arms and carefully removed the plastic, freeing the little seahorse. It twirled gracefully in the water before swimming away, as if to say thank you.
But this was just the beginning. The Plastic Monster was far too big for them to clean up on their own.
Nerida clenched her fists with determination. "We have to stop this monster! But how?"
Dr. Blue thought for a moment before nodding. "Not just us—our entire town needs to come together for this cleanup. We must come up with a big plan to clear the ocean."
The jellyfish's lights flickered once more. "If the flow of plastic waste isn’t stopped, our ocean may never recover."
Kai gritted her teeth. "Then we know exactly what we have to do."
The children and Dr. Blue made a firm decision—to fight back against the Plastic Monster!
Inside their submarine, Poseidon, Nerida, and Kai observed the devastation caused by the Plastic Monster. Among the floating plastic debris, they noticed massive turtle tracks.
Nerida pointed. “Where do these tracks lead?”
The jellyfish beside them flickered its lights. “A family of sea turtles used to nest here. But we haven’t seen them in a long time... They may have lost their way.”
Kai’s eyes widened. “Lost turtles? We need to find them!”
Poseidon activated the submarine’s radar. Faint, scattered signals appeared near the coral reef. “I think I found them! But something is slowing them down.”
They quickly moved forward. Through the glass, they saw four sea turtles tangled in plastic waste!
Chapter 5: The Lost Sea Turtles

One turtle had its flipper stuck in a fishing net, another was trapped inside plastic bags.
Nerida’s heart pounded. “We have to help them! They won’t survive like this!”
Poseidon used the submarine’s robotic arms to cut the net and free the first turtle.
“One of them looks really weak,” Kai said worriedly.
“If they stay here much longer, they’ll starve…” added Nerida.
Then she had an idea. “Can the jellyfish call other sea creatures for help?”
The jellyfish flickered brightly, and suddenly schools of fish appeared from the deep. Tiny cleaner fish swam toward the turtles, gently removing dirt and plastic from their bodies.
Together, the team freed three turtles, but the last one was still stuck in a tight mess of bags, unable to swim to the surface.
The last turtle was still trapped. It needed to breathe but couldn’t move!
“If it doesn’t get out soon, it’ll drown!” cried Kai. Poseidon tried to cut the tight plastic knots, but they wouldn’t budge. Nerida closed her eyes, then suddenly shouted, “Turn on the submarine’s lights! Maybe it will follow the light!” They aimed the bright beams toward the surface. Slowly, the turtle began to move, freeing itself bit by bit, following the light upward—until it finally reached the surface. The turtles swam to safety. The largest one turned, bowed its head in gratitude, and disappeared into the deep. The jellyfish flickered. “Thank you. But the Plastic Monster still grows…” Nerida clenched her fists. “We need to stop plastic pollution—completely.” Poseidon nodded. “The Coral Kingdom is in danger. We’ll need greater help.” Just then, a deep voice echoed through the ocean:
“Brave children, hear me…”
A colossal shadow passed the submarine window. The water swirled, and a giant whale appeared before them.

Chapter 6: The Warning of the Giant Whale

The huge shadow reflected on the submarine's glass astonished everyone. A whale as large as the eye could see was floating right in front of the Coral Kingdom.
The whale's voice echoed through the sea and reached their ears like a melody:
"You brave children, follow me..." Dr. Blue whispered excitedly: "It's... the Blue Whale! The biggest in the world!" Nerida, Summer, and Ege looked at the whale with passion. They felt tiny in front of its size.Summer gathered her courage and spoke: "You... how do you speak to me?" The whale's voice rippled through the water once more:
"My voice echoes through the depths of the water. I speak in the language of our seas. And now I warn you." The children listened separately.

“The oceans are sicker than they used to be. Our waters are filled with plastic, our corals are dying. But the biggest danger is yet to come…”
Aegean asked curiously. “What do you mean? Is there a bigger danger?”
“The Plastic Monster is growing. But it’s not just because of the trash… People are overfishing, ships are polluting the oceans, and the climate is changing. If this continues, life below the sea will disappear.”
Nerida looked at Dr. Blue with concern. “Can’t we stop this?”
The whale slowly turned in the water. “You have to make those who pollute the oceans the most aware.”
Summer clenched her fists. “We can do it! We can educate everyone in the school and the town about this!”
Dr. Blue nodded. “Yes, we can start a big awareness campaign. But that’s not something one school can do. We have to get more people involved.”
The whale’s voice rose once more:
“I will guide you. But be careful… Some people may resist change. But you continue to make the voice of the seas heard!” “We are not alone in this struggle!” Aegean said with a smile. The whale shook its great tail, creating ripples in the water, and disappeared into the dark depths. The children looked at each other. They knew much better what to do now. They had to start a bigger movement to save the seas!

After the Great Whale’swarning, the OceanGuardian submarine began its ascent toward the surface. The children were determined to launch a massive awareness campaign to save the oceans. However, as they neared the surface, they encountered an unexpected sight. The
closer they got, the more they realized
the water was coated with a thick, black,
oily layer that shimmered ominously under the sunlight.
Nerida wrinkled her nose. "What is this?
Why is the water so dirty?"Dr. Blue immediately activated the submarine’s analysis system. A bright
red warning flashed on the screen:
Chapter 7: The Mystery Behind the Oil Spill ZeynepPlevne
EnesPlevne

WARNING: OIL SPILL DETECTED!
Aegean’s face filled with concern. "An oil spill? What does
that mean?"
Dr. Blue spoke seriously. "Large ships and oil rigs
sometimes leak oil into the ocean. The oil
floats on the surface and poisons marine life. It coats
birds’ feathers, suffocates fish, and kills
coral reefs."Summer crossed her arms in frustration.
"People just never stop damaging the ocean, do they?"
Just then, a massive silhouette appeared on the horizon—a rusty, old tanker, stationed right near the spill.
Nerida narrowed her eyes and pointed. "Could that ship be responsible for this?"
Dr. Blue and the children decided to use the submarine’s sonar system to trace the source of the spill.
A series of waves on the screen confirmed that the oil was coming from the tanker. Aegean frowned. "So they’re dumping oil into the ocean on purpose?"
Dr. Blue sighed. "Sometimes, old ships release oil into the water instead of paying for proper maintenance. If this tanker’s crew is doing this illegally, we need to report them."
Summer stepped forward. "But we can’t just accuse them without proof! We need solid evidence first

Dr. Blue nodded. "Absolutely right. If we want to stop them, we need to document what they’re doing."
The children quickly formed a plan. Nerida activated the submarine’s underwater camera, carefully adjusting the angle to capture clear footage of the thick oil leaking from the ship’s hull. At the same time, Aegean maneuvered a drone camera, sending it soaring above the tanker to record the dark slick spreading across the water’s surface. Meanwhile, Summer focused on identifying the vessel, carefully noting down the ship’s name and identification number painted on its rusted exterior. Every detail mattered—this evidence would be their strongest tool in stopping the pollution. Within minutes, they had gathered everything they needed.
"We got it!" Nerida exclaimed. "What do we do now?"
Dr. Blue immediately sent the collected data to marine
protection authorities and environmental organizations.
Just then, something stirred on the ship’s deck.

"Someone spotted us!" Aegean shouted in alarm.
Up on the tanker, several crew members in dark uniforms had gathered, peering down at the submarine and speaking into radios.
Summer tensed. "Are they coming after us?"
Dr. Blue checked the submarine’s speed controls. "Don’t worry. By the time they can react, we’ll be far away. But now we know who they are."
As the submarine quickly retreated, the children
exchanged determined glances.
They had just escaped a dangerous situation,
but more importantly, they had taken a critical
step in their fight to protect the ocean.
Now, they knew the truth: The first step to
saving the seas was stopping those who
were destroying them.

CHAPTER 8: TALKING THE PEOPLE
Furkan.TurgutReis
Yunus.TurgutReis
As the submarine sped away from the site of the oil spill, the boys and Dr Blue were reviewing the evidence they had collected. They had photos, videos and data showing the sources of the oil spill. Nerida shook her head from side to side as she looked at the images on the screen.
‘Everyone needs to see this. If people don't realise how the seas are being polluted, nothing will change!’ she said with determination.
Summer sighed. ‘But how? Who's going to believe anything a couple of kids say?’

Dr Blue smiled. ‘Not a few kids. If you speak as informed young people telling the truth based on science, people will listen to you. Knowledge is our greatest power.’
These words motivated the children even more. If they really wanted to make a change, they needed to get this information to as many people as possible. Aegean immediately came up with an idea: ‘We could make a presentation! We can tell the people in the town everything.’
‘Yes, but just telling them is not enough,’ Summer thought. ‘We have to make them part of the fight.’
Nerida had a great idea. ‘Let's start a campaign! Social media, school billboards, even a big event.’
Dr Blue smiled. ‘I think you have some great ideas. So, who do we need to talk to?’
They started to make a list. First they planned to talk to the teachers at their school and make a presentation. Then they would go to the mayor and ask for support for environmental policies. They would talk to fishermen and explain the consequences of overfishing and sea pollution. Finally, they planned to reach out to local newspapers and news channels to publicise their campaign to a wider audience.

When they went to school the next day, they got permission from their teacher to present their project. The principal listened attentively and nodded with a smile. ‘I am very proud of such an initiative, let's organise an event right away!’ When the presentation day came, Nerida, Summer and Aegean took the stage. On the big screen, they showed photos and videos of plastic pollution, oil spills and coral bleaching and explained how the seas were under threat. The students listened in amazement. After the presentation was over, one child raised his hand.
‘But what can we do?’ he asked. Summer answered by holding up a large poster. ‘The first step is to be aware! We can start by not throwing rubbish into the sea, supporting recycling and speaking out against companies that harm the environment!’ The hall erupted in applause. The campaign was already having an impact even before it started. After school, the children went to the town hall to meet the mayor. The mayor listened attentively, frowned when he saw the evidence of the oil spill. ‘This is a very serious problem. I will direct the environmental inspection team to investigate this tanker company.’ The children looked at each other with joy. The first official step had been taken!

Finally, they went to talk to the local fishermen. Most fishermen did not fully understand why the seas were polluted and did not realise how it would affect them. Aegean opened the map they had with them and spoke: ‘If the pollution increases, the fish will decrease. If there are fewer fish, you catch fewer fish. And this will affect the livelihood of all of you.’ The fishermen nodded their heads. When they saw the facts, they realised they had to do something about it. ‘Maybe we should organise a coastal clean-up together!’ suggested an old fisherman. The children looked at each
other with joy. As they talked to people, they felt that they were
starting to raise awareness. There was now a movement in the town
to protect the seas. When they returned home that evening,
Summer looked up at the sky and whispered:
‘I hope the big Whale is watching us with pride.’ Dr Blue patted
the children on the shoulders. ‘And this is just the beginning.
If we really want to save the seas, we have a lot more work to do.’

CHAPTER 9: RECYCLİNG HEROES

HATO Ataberk

The awareness campaign had quickly spread throughout the town. The children’s presentations, social media posts, and discussions with the fishermen had made an impact. But they knew that saving the ocean required more than just raising awareness—it needed real action.
One morning, while having breakfast with her family, Summer told them about their campaign. Her father nodded approvingly but then asked, "You’re doing a great job, but people rarely stop throwing things away. At the very least, can you help them recycle?"
This sparked an idea in Summer’s mind. "Why don’t we organize a big recycling event in town?" she thought excitedly.
As soon as she arrived at school, she shared her idea with Nerida and Aegean. Nerida immediately jumped up in excitement. "Yes! If people learn how to sort their trash properly, we can stop the Plastic Monster from growing!"
When Dr. Blue heard about their plan, he was fully on board. "If we can encourage recycling, we can prevent more waste from reaching the ocean," he said, and together they started mapping out a plan.
The first step was securing support from the town’s officials. With the help of the mayor’s office, they placed recycling bins all over town, clearly labeled for plastic, glass, paper, and metal. This would make it easier for people to dispose of their waste correctly. But bins alone weren’t enough—people needed to understand why recycling was important.

To make recycling more engaging, they decided to host a large event in the town square. The children would design posters explaining the benefits of recycling, organize fun activities, and set up a system where people could exchange their recyclables for small rewards. The event would end with a big community cleanup effort.
Over the next few days, preparations were in full swing. Aegean designed colorful flyers and posters, while Summer and Nerida visited schools to personally invite students and teachers. Even the local bakery got involved, offering free bread to those who participated in the recycling effort.
When the day of the event arrived, the town square buzzed with energy. Families, children, and curious townspeople gathered, each bringing bags filled with recyclables. Plastic bottles, old newspapers, glass jars—instead of polluting the ocean, they would now be repurposed and reused.
To make the process more interactive, the children set up a small demonstration area. Nerida showed how plastic could be melted down and turned into new products, while Summer and Aegean explained how to properly separate different types of waste.
Even the youngest children were eager to learn. A little girl, holding an empty water bottle, looked up at her mother and asked, "Mom, we should put plastic in this bin, right? That way, we can help protect the ocean!"
Hearing this, Dr. Blue smiled as he watched the excited children and proud parents. The change had already begun.

By the end of the event, an entire truckload of recyclable waste had been collected. The local government agreed to send everything to a recycling facility, and the townspeople promised to be more mindful about their waste from now on.
Exhausted but happy, Summer, Nerida, and Aegean sat together in the middle of the square, watching the sunset. Aegean looked up at the sky and sighed contentedly. "We really made a difference today, didn’t we?"
Nerida nodded proudly. "Not just today. People are finally aware of the problem. This is just the beginning."
The recycling event had been a huge success. The townspeople were now more mindful about sorting their waste and understood the importance of keeping the oceans clean. However, as Dr. Blue had warned, plastic pollution wasn’t the only threat to marine life.
The next morning, Nerida, Kai, and Poseidon met Dr. Blue by the shore. It was early, and the fishing boats were already heading out to sea, slowly disappearing into the horizon. As they watched, one of the boats approached the dock, and something unusual caught their attention.
Poseidon squinted. "What is that?" he asked, pointing to a large fishing net hanging from the side of the boat. The net was full of tiny fish, and even pieces of coral were tangled within it.
Kai’s expression darkened. "If fishermen keep fishing like this, soon there won’t be any fish left in the ocean."
At that moment, a fisherman stepped off the boat and walked toward them. It was Old Fisherman, one of the most experienced men in town.
Chapter 10: Talking to the Fisherman
Noticing the children, he smiled and greeted them warmly. "Hey, kids! How are you? I heard about the big event you organized yesterday. Well done!"
Nerida sighed. "Yes, but recycling alone isn’t enough. There’s a big problem with fishing, too."
The fisherman raised an eyebrow. "What problem?"
Kai opened her notebook and read aloud. "Overfishing... even the smallest fish are getting caught in the nets. If this continues, the marine ecosystem will be destroyed, and soon there won’t be enough fish left in the sea."
Old Fisherman took a deep breath and gazed out at the water. "There used to be a lot more fish in these waters," he said thoughtfully. "When I first went fishing with my father, we would cast a net and pull it up full. Now, we wait for hours, and still, we catch far less than before."
Poseidon nodded solemnly. "That’s exactly the problem. If we don’t give fish enough time to reproduce, soon even fishing won’t be possible."
The fisherman scratched his chin. "You’re right, kids. But this is how we make a living. If we stop fishing, how will we feed our families?"
Dr. Blue stepped forward. "If we switch to sustainable fishing, we can protect both the ocean and the future of fishing itself."
The fisherman’s eyes narrowed in curiosity. "Sustainable fishing? What’s that?"
Nerida quickly explained. "It means only catching fish that are big enough, avoiding fishing during breeding seasons, and using nets that don’t trap young fish or harm the ecosystem."
Old Fisherman nodded slowly. "That makes sense. But we don’t know much about this. Can you teach us?"
Kai and Poseidon exchanged excited glances. "Of course!" Poseidon said eagerly. "In fact, we can organize a meeting for all the fishermen in town!"
The fisherman smiled. "Then I’ll talk to the others. We all rely on these waters for our livelihoods, so protecting them is our responsibility too."
Dr. Blue and the children shook hands with Old Fisherman. Their next mission was clear: educating all the fishermen in town about sustainable fishing.
Chapter 11: The Message from the Lighthouse
As the sun began to set, Nerida, Summer, and Aegean walked along the shore toward the old lighthouse. Their conversation with the fisherman had sparked many new ideas, but they also wanted to understand why the oceans were changing so rapidly.
Dr. Blue stopped in front of the lighthouse. "This lighthouse is one of the oldest structures in town," he said. "For years, it guided sailors, its light showing the way through stormy nights."
Summer looked up at the towering structure. "But it doesn’t seem to be in use anymore."
"That’s right," said a voice.
The children turned to see an elderly man standing by the lighthouse door. His weathered face carried the wisdom of years spent by the sea.
"But once, this place was more than just a beacon for ships. It was a place where people could see how pure and vibrant the ocean once was."
Curious, the children listened intently. This was Mr. Hakan, the lighthouse keeper, who had lived here for decades and knew the town’s history better than anyone.
"There was a time," he continued, "when I could stand here and see coral reefs far in the distance. The water was so clear that fish danced between the rocks. But now... most of those corals are gone."
Nerida frowned. "Why? What changed?"
