This book is created by the Asturian students to introduce the Asturian language to their Ukranian eTwinning partners. This short introduction will help our partners to enjoy the beauty of the Asturian language and learn its basics to introduce themselves in Asturian.

The Asturian Language. Introduction

Asturian comes from Latin. It started in the Middle Ages (8th-10th century) in Asturies, an autonomous community in northern Spain. The language grew when the Kingdom of Asturias was created in 718 AD. People spoke it in Asturies, León, and Cantabria, Zamora and Salamanca. Nowadays around 250,000 can speak and write Asturian. It is one of the world´s endengared languages. Although learned in shools in a voluntary basis, it is not official in Spain but there is a strong movement fighting for its official status.

The Asturian Alphabet I

The Asturian Alphabet is a variant of the Latin alphabet used to write in the Asturian Language. It is formed by 24 letters. Some sounds are similar to the English language, like ch or f. Others sound different like vowels specially. (Luis C.)
