Ege, worried, called his parents. They tried to calm him down and advised him to call and notify the fire department. Indeed, a merciless fire was consuming tree after tree. Leaves were disappearing one by one in the ever-increasing flames. The choking smoke had driven away all living things. Ege picked up the phone. Calmly, the operator told him what had happened and where he should come to put out the fire.

Ege’s heart raced as he watched them move with purpose, their steps steady and swift despite the chaos around them. The thick smoke stung his eyes, but he didn’t look away. He had to make sure they knew where the fire was worst. His thoughts raced too, darting between his own safety and the lives of those still trapped inside. The sound of crackling flames was deafening, but he pushed it to the back of his mind.

The lead firefighter, a woman with a stern face but sharp eyes, locked onto him for a moment, then nodded. She signaled to the others and they ran toward the most engulfed part of the building. Ege exhaled, only now realizing how tightly he’d been holding his breath. But the fear didn’t fade. It never did in moments like this.
