Chapter 1
Physical Development

Once there was a sheep called
Tom. Tom was born with a sense
of adventure. He wanted to run
through the field of flowers,
but first he needed to learn how
to walk. Tom practiced and
practiced all morning.

Eventually he bumped into a chick. Unlike Tom the little chick
had already begun to talk. Tom wanted to speak with the little
chick but did not know how, all he could do was babble.

Hi my name is Chirp
Bah?

H-Hello m-my namei-is Tom
After a while he began to understand what the little chick was
telling him. Yet he still could not say what he wanted to
because he did not know how to talk. He watched Chirp speak
and tried to copy how he said each word. With much effort he
introduced himself as well.

Hi there! Don't worry it also took me a while to learn
how to talk too

They talked and talked all day. They also played games like
tag and hide and go seek. Tom is glad he practiced because he
met his good friend Chirp who has taught him how to speak.

1, 2, 3...
Hmm where to hide...

Chapter 2
Social Development

Tom loves his mother very much. He knows she
protects him and loves him with all her heart. She
has provided him with shelter and food since he was
born.

Tom hasn't had a chance to really talk to any other
ls sheep, at first he was curious but now he feels a
little scared. He does not know the other lambs,
and wonders if they are as nice as his mother.

Should I be talking to strangers?

Tom has what is called stranger anxiety. This
means he becomes very confused and
distressed when meeting new people and
wishes to be close to a familiar face. Tom
decides to talk to them either way because

Cognitive Development:
Sensorimotor
Cognitive Development
Chapter 3

Tom and Chirp were playing hide and seek today. Tomtold Chirp to hide and he would look for him.

I know you're there!
Tom was about a year old. He knew that Chirp was still in the Flower
bed even if he couldn't see him.

Tom knew where Chirp was becausehe has reached the sensorimotor stage!

Cognitive Development:
The Preoperational
Stage

Tom really wanted carrots. His mother told him not until after dinner.

Tom somehow imagined that his
mother was a dragon he had to
pass to get to the carrots.

When Tom got past the dragon, he realized
he had been role-playing. His mother
wasn't a dragon and the carrot wasn't
treasure!

This is an example of the preoperational
stage of cognitive development.

Cognitive Development:
Concrete Operational
Stage

Tom has just turned seven. He knows that Carol is his mother, his mother is
sheep, and a sheep is an animal.
She is my mother

During this stage Tom is able
to reverse the the order of
relationships between mental
categories. He was able to
establish that his mother is an
animal.

Psychosocial Development:
Trust vs. Mistrust

My sheep friends say I shouldn't trust chirp because
he's a chick.
Tom doesn't know if he should trust Chirp because
the other sheep say he shouldn't.

But i've known Chirp since I was born and he's my bestfriend!
But Tom knows Chirp is trustworthy because he's
his best friend.

In this stage Tom is
questioning his relationship
with people and who he can
trust and who he cannot. He
ends with saying he can trust
Chirp because he has known
him for a very long time.

Psychosocial Development:
Autonomy vs. doubt

Tom loves his mother but he feels like he is
relying on her too much and is always
asking her for help.

So he decides that he will start gathering
carrots by himself instead of asking his
mother for help.

Tom begins to question if he
can do things himself or is he
reliant on the help of others.
He knows his mother cannot
always help him so he must
learn to be independent.
