In a small Bulgarian village, there lived a man named Hitar Petar, famous for his quick wit and clever tricks. Though poor, he was respected by the villagers for his intelligence, and even the rich were wary of crossing him.

One day, the richest farmer in the village decided to challenge Petar. He offered him a loaf of extremely salty bread and said, “If you can eat this without drinking water, I’ll give you a basket of gold. But if you fail, you must work for me for a month.”
Petar agreed to the challenge and insisted it be held in the village square so everyone could witness it. As he sat down to eat, he brought along a jug of water. The farmer, confident Petar would fail, smiled smugly.
Petar dipped the bread into the water to soften it and ate it easily. When the farmer complained, Petar replied, “You never said the bread couldn’t touch the water!” The crowd laughed, and Petar claimed the basket of gold.
Word of Petar’s cleverness soon reached the Sultan, who invited him to the palace. The Sultan offered three tasks, promising great rewards if Petar succeeded, but threatening punishment if he failed.
The first task was to “bring a bag of truth.” Petar returned with a bag of onions. When the Sultan asked why, Petar explained, “Truth has many layers, and it often makes people cry.” The Sultan laughed and accepted the answer.
The second task was to “make the sun rise at night.” Petar used a mirror to reflect moonlight into the Sultan’s room. “The sun sleeps, but the moon shares its light at night,” Petar explained, impressing the Sultan.
The third and final task was to bring something that neither exists entirely nor is completely absent. Petar brought a net full of air. “It exists, but you cannot see or hold it,” he explained. The Sultan, amazed by his cleverness, rewarded him.
