The Baker's Secret
Written By: Mary Stoll

In a quiet town, there was a small bakery where a girl named Sage made soft and warm bread. She worked alone, shaping dough and listening to the stories people shared as they came in.

One day, a man named Josef walked into the bakery. He had silver hair, kind eyes, and a secret he was hiding.

"Sage," he said, "I need to tell you a story. A very important one."

Josef told Sage that long ago, he had been a soldier—but not just any soldier.
"I was on the wrong side," he said. "I made terrible choices. And now, I need your forgiveness."

Josef told her about a girl named Minka, who had lived during a very scary time.
Minka was taken far away from home and placed behind barbed wire fences, where she was treated unfairly.
But even in the darkest days, she had a story in her heart.

Minka wrote stories in her mind—fairy tales, filled with hope.
Even when everything was taken from her, she had her words and her dreams.
"A story can keep a person alive," Minka once said.

Sage looked at Josef.
"What happened to Minka?" she asked.

Josef’s eyes filled with sadness.
"She survived, but she lost so much. And I was one of the people who caused her pain."

That night, Sage found an old letter hidden in a cookbook.
It was from Minka herself.
"Even when people are unkind, we must not become like them," the letter said.
"Some wounds heal, but the story must never be forgotten."

Sage didn’t know what to do.
"Should I forgive someone who did something so terrible?" she wondered.
Her grandmother’s words echoed in her mind:
"Kindness is like bread. You must knead it, shape it, and let it rise."
