Preface
Parents play a significant role in shaping how children ask questions and engage with the world around them. This book seeks to highlight different parenting styles and how these styles influence children's behaviors, attitudes, and interactions through various activities. Drawing inspiration from Annette Lareau's Concerted Cultivation and the Accomplishment of Natural Growth, this book explores the impact of two distinct parenting approaches and their effects on childhood development.
Natural Growth is a parenting style that allows children greater freedom to navigate their activities without much interference, letting them develop at their own pace in social situations. In contrast, Concerted Cultivation is commonly practiced by middle-class families and involves a more active and structured approach, where parents take a hands-on role in guiding and participating in their children's activities. Both styles lead to different outcomes in how children interact with the world and with others, offering unique insights into the role of parenting in childhood development.

Every Sunday afternoon, children of all backgrounds from around the city of Sunny Grove meet at a park known as Sunflower Hill for a scavenger hunt.

Colton and Lydia are brother and sister who love to spend their Sunday afternoons playing with other kids at Sunflower Hill. They enjoy getting involved in and outside of school by playing sports like soccer, especially on the weekends!

Every Sunday, Colton and Lydia’s parents enjoy watching the kids’ scavenger hunt in the park.
Their mother is a doctor who leads the scavenger hunt every Sunday. Their father is the coach for the co-ed soccer team at Colton and Lydia’s elementary school. Every week, they meet up with other kids to have a fun Summer day!

“I cannot wait to start the Scavenger Hunt! I wonder what the theme is for this week.”
“Me too! I wonder who will come to the park this week for the scavenger hunt. I cannot wait to make new friends!”

Blake and Ellen go to the same elementary school as Lydia and Colton, but the school is so big they have never met! Back at home, Blake and Ellen like to stay inside and watch movies at home while their parents are at work all day after school.

Blake and Ellen’s parents work together at a local grocery store called Fresh Mart. They both work long hours to support their kids, especially at night and on the weekends.
This weekend, their parents made an agreement with Lydia and Colton’s mom to drop them off at the scavenger hunt for a day filled with fun!

Blake and Ellen are on their way to Sunflower Hill. This is their first time participating in the scavenger hunt!

“Welcome everyone to this Sunday’s Scavenger Hunt! Today’s theme is to find things around the playground that are YELLOW! The person with the most items will win a prize. Please search for the following things that are yellow: a sunflower, dandelion, button, ribbon, and a toy car.”
"Yay!"
