The Castle

TORTONA

Tortona is a small town in the north of Italy. It is in the Piedmont region, between Milan and Genoa. About 27,000 people live there. Tortona is a quiet and peaceful place, with a lot of history and culture.

The town has old buildings, beautiful churches, and small streets. One famous place is the Cathedral of Tortona. It is big and very old. Another important place is the Castello, or Castle. It is on a hill and you can see all of the town from there.

Tortona is also famous for food and wine. People eat local dishes like pasta, risotto, cheese and meat. Farmers in the area around Tortona grow grapes, so the wine is very good.

Many people visit Tortona to relax and enjoy nature. There are parks, rivers, and hills for walking or biking.

The weather is nice in spring and autumn.

Tortona is not very popular, but it is really Italian.

People are friendly and the streets are calm. It is a good place to see a different side of Italy, away from big cities.

If you want to enjoy history, food, and nature, Tortona is a great place to visit.

FAUSTO COPPI

Fausto Coppi was a famous Italian cyclist. He was born on September 15, 1919, in Castellania, Italy. He started cycling when he was young. He became a professional cyclist in 1939. Coppi was a strong and fast rider. He won many races. He won the Giro d’Italia five times and the Tour de France two times. These are two of the most important bicycle races in the world. People called him “Il Campionissimo,” which means “Champion of Champions” in Italian.

During World War II, Coppi was a soldier. He was a prisoner in Africa for some time. After the war, he came back to cycling and won many more races.

He was not only fast but also smart. He trained hard and used new ideas to improve. Sadly, Fausto Coppi died young, on January 2, 1960, from malaria, a serious disease.

Fausto Coppi is still remembered today. He is a legend in the sport of cycling. Many people in Italy and around the world still admire him for his great achievements.

THE WATER BOTTLE

Coppi had a big rivalry with another Italian cyclist, Gino Bartali. Many people in Italy followed their races. Photographer Carlo Martini, who was following the Tour de France on July 4, 1952, shot Coppi and Bartali while handing "le bidon" one to the other. Nothing more than a water bottle, in French. The two cyclists performed a symbolic gesture that would go down in the history of sportsmanship.

TORTONA AND FAUSTO COPPI

At the Town Hall in Tortona, you can find the “Galleria Coppi,” a permanent photographic exhibition dedicated to the Campionissimo. The display features a series of photographs taken by his friends and by his followers. The Councillor for Sport of the City of Tortona commented on the significance of this exhibition as follows:

“I am particularly pleased that such a prominent sports figure, who made history through his remarkable accomplishments, is being remembered with the recognition he deserves. He helped draw international attention to our region. It is precisely by nurturing this memory and following the example of such outstanding individuals that we should all find inspiration to grow and promote our City together.”
