Once upon a time, a queen who was
both loving and kind sat sewing by the
fire. As she sewed she looked up at
the snow and she thought to herself,
"If only I had a child with skin as
white as snow, lips as red as blood,
and hair as black as the wood in this
window frame."

Well, the queen did have a child, and her lips
were as red as blood, her skin as white as
snow, and her hair as black as ebony wood,
and she was named Snow White. Sadly, the
queen died shortly afterward, and the king
married another woman who was neither
loving nor kind. All she wanted was to be the
most beautiful person in all the land. Every day
she would look into her magic mirror and say,
"Mirror Mirror, on the wall, who in this land is
fairest of all?"

Whenever the queen asked this, the mirror
would respond, "You, my queen, are fairest of
all." However, little Snow White grew older and
more and more beautiful, and one day when
the queen asked, "Mirror Mirror, on the wall,
who in this land is fairest of all?" the mirror
answered, "You, my queen, are fair, it is true,
but Snow White is a thousand times fairer than
you." "Snow White?" cried the queen. "The
little girl? That will never do. Something will
have to be done about her."

The queen summoned a huntsman with a
quiver of arrows slung over his back and a bow
hanging loosely from his hand. "You there!"
she called to him, so the huntsman came.
"Take Snow White into the woods," she told
him, "and kill her. Without Snow White, I shall
certainly be the fairest of them all!" And she
let out a loud cackle, and it struck fear in the
huntsman's heart, so he set off immediately to
find the little girl.

The huntsman took Snow White out into
the woods, but when he looked into her
eyes and saw how beautiful and fair she
was, he could not kill her. "Run away, you
poor child," he told her sadly, for in the
forest where lived the friendly animals
and the tall trees whose leaves covered
everything like a roof, no more harm cold
come to Snow White.

Snow White heeded the huntsman's advice
and fled to the depths of the forest. It was
very late at night, and she was tired. As she
scanned the now very dark forest for
somewhere soft to sleep, she spotted a little
house by a few trees. The lights were off,
and no one was home. She decided that,
because she wouldn't be disturbing anybody,
she would stay in the house for the night.

Apparently, Snow White had been
disturbing someone. No sooner had she
fallen sound asleep in one of the many
beds in the little house than seven sets of
footsteps came marching to the door. The
footsteps belonged to the seven dwarfs,
who were finally coming home from a long
day working in the mines. They were
surprised to find a girl sleeping in one of
their beds, so they immediately woke her
to ask her what she was doing in their
house.

Snow White lit a candle to see who had caused
the disturbance. She saw the seven dwarfs and
immediately said, "Oh, is this your house? Oh,
I'm so sorry, I only meant to stay in it one
night, because my stepmother is trying to kill
me because she wants to be the most beautiful
in all the land..." But they told her, "Hush. We
have heard enough of your story. It's a sad
one, and because we feel sorry for you we'll let
you stay here." "Oh, will you?" cried Snow
White, and she thanked them again and again.
