On a sunny afternoon in May, Hope and Ethan decided to take a walk by the lake. It wasn’t far from their home, and they had their nanny with them.

They decided to walk around the lake and count how many baby ducks they could find. It was Spring after all, and all the babies were hatching.

“You know a duck could have a lot of baby ducks, even as many as 15,” Hope told Ethan.

“I hope we find a lot of them in their nests!” He responded.

“A nest of eggs is often called a clutch,” The nanny interjected.

The three continued on their path around the lake.

“What’s that?” Ethan asked. He pointed to something billowing in the wind. It was headed straight for a family of ducks.

Hope ran and snatched it from their path holding it up victoriously. “It was a plastic bag!” She said.

“I’m glad you caught it,” the nanny said, “it could’ve hurt the ducks.”

“How could it have hurt the ducks?” Ethan asked.

“Well, they could have accidentally eaten it and choked. The bag could have wrapped around their head and asphyxiated them which means they wouldn’t be able to breath.” The nanny responded.

“We should put this bag somewhere far away from the ducks,” Hope said.

As the group was walking towards a trash can Ethan bent down to pick up a straw on the ground.

“Why is there so much garbage?” He asked.

“I don’t know,” Hope replied. “Maybe we can pick it up and help the ducks!”

“I think that is a great idea,” the nanny said.

“We can use this bag!” Ethan said, and he put the straw inside it.

The nanny found plastic gloves in her super awesome nanny bag and handed a pair to Hope and Ethan.

“We need to wear gloves to keep ourselves safe because there could be nasty germs on the trash,” she said.

The trio wandered around the lake picking up trash. They still kept their count of the baby ducks and said ‘hi’ as they passed each one. They had counted a total of 10 ducklings so far.
