My mom was sponsored by her spouse, my dad, in the year 2005.

Hello! My name is Raina, and beside me is my older brother, Kalvin. We are considered second-generation Canadians!

I was born in Canada; however, my mother was born in Myanmar and immigrated to Canada, making her a first-generation Canadian.

Why did my mom leave Myanmar?

PUSH FACTORS
Political oppression
The military government controlled everything, arrested people who spoke out, and took away freedoms, which made my mother want to leave Myanmar, as it felt very unsafe and frightening for her.

Violent conflicts
There were many ongoing conflicts between the military and ethnic groups in Myanmar, leading to frequent fighting. This made many areas unsafe, and my mom didn’t want to raise us in those conditions because the violence forced families to lose their homes and live in fear for their safety.

Economic Hardship
Myanmar faced extreme poverty and poor economic conditions, making it hard for her to survive. Jobs were scarce, prices were high, and access to healthcare, education, and better opportunities was very limited.

PULL FACTORS
Why did my mom move to Canada?
Family ties
My mom decided to move to Canada to be reunited with close relatives and her spouse, who had already settled there, so she could have their support and feel more at home

New Beginning
She came to Canada seeking a fresh start, hoping to build a better life and provide her children with more opportunities for the future.

Economic opportunities
The promising job opportunities and the chance to improve our financial stability as a family convinced my mother to immigrate to Canada.

How did your mother become Canadian?
She came through the family class as she was sponsored by her partner, my father!
Were there any challenges or benefits?

CHALLENGES

cultural adjustment

Cost of living
When my mom moved to Canada, it was challenging to find affordable housing, especially in cities like Toronto. Despite the high costs, she believed in a better life here and worked hard to achieve it.

BENEFITS

Human rights
My mom came to Canada to feel safe and free. In Myanmar, they were scared to speak up, but in Canada, everyone has the right to speak. Here, she doesn’t have to be afraid and can be herself.

Job opportunities
My mom moved to Canada for better job opportunities. Although it was challenging at first, she believed this journey would lead to a more stable and fulfilling future.
