That's me, at about age 

three. According to my 

parents, I was always a 

very optimistic child. I 

rarely cried, and I 

focused more on making 

others feel better. I was 

pretty bossy, but my 

parents thought that was 

good for empowering me.

I agree.

So what about my parents?

Well, my mom is a Kindergarten 

teacher and was very involved with 

PTA when I was in school. She made 

me think school was actually fun, so 

education has always been something I 

loved. Learning was my favorite 

hobby.

My dad has always been an 

Information Technology manager. He's 

better with computers than I am. 

Which meant . . .

PINBALL TOURNAMENTS.

That led to an interest in space, in fact. I 

started watching every astronomy 

documentary and show I could find on the 

Science Channel.

These guys were definitely my prime 

nerdy influences. That's my mom, who 

reads a book a day and taught me 

everything about school. Then there's 

my dad, who encouraged me to always do 

my best after seeing my potential shine 

in gifted classes (hey, let me brag a 

little, I'm proud of that!). He struggled 

with ADHD in his schooling days and 

despite being bright, he was always seen 

as a goof-off or a class clown simply due 

to focus issues. He wanted me to have 

the college education he couldn't obtain 

due to the little setbacks in his life that 

added up. He also wanted me to know 

every band before it was popular so I 

could brag about live shows, and he 

instilled my love for Tetris, Pinball, and 

Star Trek!

My little sister, photo-bombing my 

parents' photo? She's the literal photo-

BOMB. I love her. She's going to be 

great. She's the nerdiest fashionista 

rockstar I've ever seen. I guess she's 

learned from the best.
