Joslyn HayesPounding the Floor
You know, it’s hard to watch
everyone else having fun while you sit
and cheer on the sidelines. An amazing
CU collegiate athlete, Joslyn Hayes, was
that person. As a middle blocker in
volleyball, her leaps are high and off the
chart.

She jumped and landed a bit too abruptly.
¨We thought it was a stress reaction and I
was told I could play volleyball for about
four weeks.” Joslyn said sadly.

Four weeks later, she excitedly walked into
the doctors office. They told her that she had
a stress fracture and couldn't play for the
rest of the season. To no surprise, Joslyn
was upset. Volleyball is her sport, you
couldn't take that away.

The rest of the season played out until they
got to the NCAA’s. Hayes is a player who is
always in it and is so enthusiastic about
winning that she even pounds the floor
with happiness. ¨I’m going to help coach
my team,¨ she decided.

She was going to help win by playing or not.
Giving pointers to individual players, and even
dancing with them in the locker room to get
them pumped all made her feel like she was
accomplishing her job without playing. ¨After I
would give one of my teammates advice, I
would wait to see if they would take it or not.
If they used that pointer in the game and they
scored a great point, I would flip out and jump
around on my braced leg.”

We sometimes learn lessons from people by
just watching. Hayes is currently coaching a
club team, BAC, this year. The 14 year old's
teach her what she and her team need to work
on. ¨They are just 14! How can someone so
young teach me so much.¨ She also included
learning from everyone, including
kindergartners.

“I learn to fix my mistakes by watching other
people. I am a player who just wants to play
but I officially conclude that it’s equally
important to watch than it is to actually be
doing the sport.”
