Jellyfish are known for drifting to 

and fro at the whim of ocean 

currents—but not all species are 

so passive. The millions of 

golden jellyfish that pack Palau’s 

Jellyfish Lake spend much of 

their lives on the move during a 

daily migration that follows the 

sun’s arc across the sky.

Bull sharks get their name 

from their short, blunt 

snout, as well as their 

pugnacious disposition and 

a tendency to head-butt 

their prey before attacking. 

They are medium-size 

sharks, with thick, stout 

bodies and long pectoral 

fins. They are gray on top 

and white below, and the 

fins have dark tips, 

particularly on young bull 

sharks.

Honeybee hives have long 

provided humans with 

honey and beeswax. Such 

commercial uses have 

spawned a large beekeeping 

industry, though many 

species still occur in the 

wild.

All honeybees are social and 

cooperative insects. A hive's 

inhabitants are generally 

divided into three types.

Marine scientists have 

undertaken the 

difficult task of 

replacing the beloved 

starfish’s common 

name with sea star 

because, well, the 

starfish is not a fish. 

It’s an echinoderm, 

closely related to sea 

urchins and sand 

dollars.

The geographic cone is the most venomous of the 500 

known cone snail species, and several human deaths 

have been attributed to them. Their venom, a complex 

concoction of hundreds of different toxins, is delivered 

via a harpoon like tooth propelled from an extendable 

proboscis. There is no antivenin for a cone snail sting, 

and treatment is limited to merely keeping victims 

alive until the toxins wear off.
