“Claire your father and I have something to tell
you.” Mrs. Callaghan (Claire’s mom) calls
Claire runs down the stairs and into the
kitchen.

“What is it?” Claire asks curiously as her father and
mother are sitting at the table.
“We have been talking about moving for a long
time and the business I work for is expanding shop
to America, so… in a week we will be flying and
moving to America.”

Claire's jaw drops, this is big news. They were
finally moving away to America, the place of their
dreams! But what about their family and friends in
Ireland this is a big change. Would the house be big
or small? Would her school have uniforms?
thoughts whirled around her head.

Claire ignored her until he started talking about work.
“by law of course, I am legally allowed to work. The law
of Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 to be
precise. But your mom now is not so in america she is
considered an alien. An alien is a person in a country
who is not a national of that country my mom explains.

“Well I have potatoes and fish ready to eat, so
lets have dinner.” My mom says as we eat and
discuss what is happening ahead.

The next couple of days we packed and got ready, we
said goodbye to everybody and on the final night had a
party that all our neighbors and family and friends went
to. I had a lot of fun, but the party ended too soon.

As I said goodbye to the last guest I started
getting ready for bed I had a long day ahead of
me.

I woke up bye my dad hustling us all in the morning to
get to the airport and then on the plan. As we pulled in
and got our tickets, we waited in the terminal the flight
would be there any minute. I barely slept at all last night I
stared at the empty room and walls with the boxes
everywhere, what was my new home like and how much
did I have to unpack… I did not want to unpack.

“Hey mom.” I ask “Yes sweetie?” She stares at me.
“Are you going to miss your job?” I say I mean I would if
I enjoyed my job and all.“Yeah, I guess but I can get it
back the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986
says that I can get my job back and my title “ “That's
good.” I smile “It sure is,” says mom.
