Faith & Friendship

This story is about two best friends named Shawn and Richard. They are both fifteen years old. They have known each other since they were little. They do everything together. They play soccer after school, help at church on weekends, and always support each other. Their Catholic faith is an important part of who they are. When they move to a new school, they feel very happy and excited. They think they will make new friends and have fun learning new things

At the beginning everything seems great. The school is big and the teachers are kind. The soccer field looks amazing. But after a few days, some students start to whisper and laugh at them. They make fun of the small crosses that Shawn and Richard wear around their necks. One student says that praying is old or strange. Another one says that religion does not belong in school. The boys try to ignore the comments but the teasing gets worse. Some classmates stop including them in projects. The soccer coach stops choosing them for the team. One day, some students even take their crosses and throw them in the trash. Shawn and Richard feel hurt and confused. They do not understand why people treat them badly just because of their beliefs

After that day, Richard becomes very quiet. He does not want to go to school anymore. Shawn feels angry but also sad. He does not know how to fix things. Both of them feel alone and different. They start to think that maybe it is better to hide who they are. But one weekend, Shawn’s older sister visits them. She studies law at the university. She sees that the boys look sad and asks what happened. When they tell her everything, she listens carefully and then gives them a small book about human rights. She explains that every person in the world has rights. Everyone has the right to be treated with respect, to believe what they want, and to feel safe at school

Shawn and Richard read the book together. They learn that what happened to them is not fair and not right. They learn that people should not be bullied or left out because of their religion or culture. Knowing this gives them courage. They decide they will not stay silent anymore. They want to speak up in a calm and respectful way. They want to make their school a better place for everyone
