The Pythagorean Theorem is one of the most recognized geometrical principles that transcends many disciplines.

When given a right triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse (c) is equal to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the other two sides, called the legs (a & b).

But what if I told you that although it is named for the Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras, the discovery of this theorem predates him by many centuries.

There is evidence that suggests that there are many cultures that had an awareness of this relationship long before Pythagoras, including ancient Babylonia, Egypt, and China.

Over 6000 years ago, the ancient Egyptians figured out how to create a right triangle using a Pythagorean Triple. 

A Pythagorean Triple are 3 whole numbers that create the side lengths of a right triangle.

They would make 12 equal sections of rope. They would put 3 sections on one side, 4 on the other, and the remaining 5 were used for the third side.

The ability to create right triangles was vital to the design of the great pyramids of Egypt.

The Pythagorean Theorem has been found on ancient clay tablets in the Babylonian region of Mesopotamia. It is said that ancient Babylonians utilized the Pythagorean Theorem for many purposes, including surveying land and construction.
