John Smith was born on August 9, 1965, in Del City, Oklahoma. He grew up in a busy house with several siblings, many of whom also wrestled. The Smith family lived and breathed the sport. Wrestling wasn’t just an activity it was a way of life.
John’s parents encouraged discipline, focus, and hard work. His brothers especially Lee Roy and Pat were strong wrestlers and role models. With a family full of competitors, John learned early that success comes from dedication, not shortcuts.
At Del City High School, John began standing out. He trained constantly, refining his quick footwork and low single-leg attacks. His work ethic made him one of the best young wrestlers in Oklahoma.
During his high school years, John captured multiple state championships, consistently outscoring his opponents and demonstrating the tenacity that would define his later career. His remarkable performances earned him All-American honors and set the stage for his storied collegiate and coaching career. Coaches and teammates alike remember him as a leader on and off the mat, always pushing himself and others to achieve excellence.
John continued his wrestling journey at Oklahoma State University. Competing for the Cowboys, he became a dominant force. His unique low single-leg style made him nearly impossible to stop.
In college, John won two NCAA Championships and built a reputation as a relentless competitor. But his goals didn’t stop there. he wanted to be the best in the world.
John won Olympic gold medals in 1988 and 1992. John Smith didn’t just dominate in high school and college. he also made his mark on the world stage. He competed in the Olympics, wrestling against the best athletes from around the globe. John won the gold medal, showing his incredible skill, speed, and determination. His success at the Olympics made him one of the most respected wrestlers in history and inspired young athletes everywhere to aim high and never give up.
