Aleka Kalaitzi - 4th Grade - Old Monuments
13th Primary School of Ampelokipi, Thessaloniki, Greece

Thessaloniki is a city rich in historical monuments. The most well-known one is the White Tower, the symbol of our city. It is a tall, circular tower at the edge of the waterfront, which in the past served as a prison.
Equally important are the Byzantine Walls or castles, which protected the city from invasions. In the city centre you can see the Arch of Galerius or Kamara, which was built in the 4th century A.D. Near it is the Rotunda, an impressive circular building of great historical value.
Finally, the city has many important churches, the most notable of which is Saint Demetrios, the patron saint and protector of Thessaloniki.

Aleka Kalaitzi - 4th Grade - Modern Monuments
13th Primary School of Ampelokipi, Thessaloniki, Greece

Apart from old monuments, Thessaloniki also has significant newer works.
The Statue of Alexander the Great is located on the New Waterfront (Nea Paralia) and shows the great king of Macedonia riding his horse, Bucephalus.
The Umbrellas are a modern sculpture by George Zongolopoulos. They are tall metallic masts that look like open umbrellas, making them a favourite spot for photographs.
Finally, the OTE Tower is a contemporary, rotating tower situated on the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) grounds. It offers a panoramic view of the entire city.

Maria Moutsidou - 3rd Grade - Traditions
13th Primary School of Ampelokipi, Thessaloniki, Greece

- The biggest tradition in Thessaloniki is the celebration of Saint Demetrios. He is the city's protector. The big day is on October 26th. The whole city celebrates with a holiday! They carry the Saint's picture (icon) around the city and have special parades. It is the most important day for the people of Thessaloniki.
- In the village of Sohos, they have a special Carnival party! The custom is about the Koudounoforoi (Bell-Wearers). Men dress in big, hairy animal skins and wear heavy copper bells. They dance and make loud noises. Why? To scare away the bad luck and wake up the springtime! It is a very old and loud tradition.

Maria Moutsidou -3rd Grade - Food
