TRAKAI CASTLE

Trakai Island Castle is one of the most famous historical landmarks in Lithuania. It is located on an island in Lake Galvė and was built in the 14th century by Grand Duke Vytautas. The castle served as a defensive fortress and a residence for Lithuanian rulers.

Today, it is fully restored and functions as a museum, attracting many visitors with its impressive architecture, scenic surroundings, and rich medieval history.

In the early 15th century, Grand Duke Vytautas built the stone castle. It became an important political and military center of Lithuania. Later, in the 16th and 17th centuries, it lost its military importance and fell into ruins.

Restoration work started in the 20th century. Today, the castle is fully restored and serves as a museum and tourist attraction.


Visitors can see exhibitions of weapons, armor, artwork, and historical artifacts. The museum also hosts cultural events, concerts, and educational programs. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Lithuania.

History
Gediminas Castle's history starts with the Legend of the Iron Wolf in the 14th century, which prompted Grand Duke Gediminas to build Vilnius as his capital. The site became a powerful brick fortress that defended against the Teutonic Knights. Although most of the castle fell into disrepair, the remaining Gediminas Tower endures as Lithuania's primary national symbol of its history and independence.
At Gediminas Castle, you can see panoramic views of Vilnius from the tower and hill, explore the museum inside the tower, and walk around the grounds to see the remains of the old fortifications.
