One day in June, my friends Brian, Kevin, Ryan, Kim and I were
playing a game of hide n' go seek, but instead of in one of our
houses we played in the woods when it was dark.

One, Two, Three...

Brian was counting, Kim was hiding in a bush, Ryan was by
the pond, Kevin hid behind a tree near Brian, and I, being the
smallest and lightest, hid up in a tree. Kevin was found first,
and then Kim, it took a while until the three of them found
Ryan shuffling by the pond. I figured I might be up there for a
while.I shifted my position when I heard footsteps crunching
the branches on the ground.
' They found me. ' I thought. I smiled and looked down,
expecting to see three smiling faces and Kevin laughing at my
well, hidden spot. Instead my smile fades to silent horror as I
stare at two amber eyes reflecting in the faint light.

A coyote has trapped me in my
tree!

The coyote growls when I shift my foot to support my weight,
it wont allow me to move much without being a threat. I want
to yell for my friends, but the coyotes pack might not be far
from here, and I am to frightened to make a sound. So instead, I
carefully break a twig from the tree and drop it a few feet away
from the coyote. It backs away from the branch. after what
seemed like forever, and a few more sticks, the coyote retreated
back into the trees away from me and my friends, and I could
finally breathe.

Grrr....

Brian eventually found me, but before, there had been
howling, so Kevin wasn't laughing.
They asked if I was alright and what had happened as we left the
woods and headed towards our neighborhood. I explained my
whole experience with the coyote down to every last detail. The
amber eyes, the stillness, the bark of the tree growing hot under
my hands, to the sounds of paw steps, the smell of greenery
mixed with what I think was fresh prey, and the coyote's brown-
ish gray fur.
