PART 1: Then (1854)

Cholera is a sickness that happens when people drink dirty water that has tiny germs in it.
These germs are so small we cannot see them, not even with glasses!
Cholera can make people very sick very quickly.

But don’t worry, because today we know how to stop it.

A long time ago, in 1854, people in London didn’t know that water could carry germs.
They believed cholera came from “bad air.”
Many families lived close together, and water wasn’t always clean.

Meet Dr. John Snow! 

Dr. John Snow was a doctor who didn’t believe the “bad air” idea. He thought cholera might come from water, not air. So he decided to investigate like a scientist or a detective!

I'm the only detective who solved a mystery without chasing a single bad guy… just a water pump!

LET'S HELP DR. SNOW TO SOLVE THE CASE !

Time to solve this. 

Dr. Snow made a map. Every time someone got sick, he put a little mark on the map.

Let's Solve This: 

Which clue do YOU think helps us find the source of cholera?

A. Everyone who got sick lived near the same water pump

B. The streets smelled funny

C. People liked wearing tall hats in 1854

Soon, he noticed something interesting:

Almost every sick person lived close to the Broad Street pump.

That was a HUGE clue!

So the answer is A

Water must be clean to keep people safe.

Now cities use filters, pipes, and sanitation systems to keep germs out of our water.

Clean water helps us stay healthy every day!

PART 2: Now Modern Day

Today, kids don’t usually get cholera at school because our water is clean and safe.
But it’s still important to learn how diseases spread, so you can help keep your school healthy. 

Just like Dr. John Snow solved a mystery long ago, you can solve health mysteries today!
