The apartment was unusually quiet. I thought I was alone, so I grabbed my notebook, my guitar, and a pen, ready to experiment with some new lyrics I’d been working on.
I strummed a few chords and started singing softly, letting the words flow naturally:
"He ain't like none of the others
Tell you 'bout the only one that ever made me stutter
Ooh yeah, I think I'm in some trouble
Tall the way I like, he's a work of art
He's such a sight, make me wanna spend the night
Just talking 'bout him got me in my feelings!
Hmm yeah, I don’t wanna leave
Kinda man who gets you what you want and he gon’ give ya what you need
Mhmm, get u one of these"
I swayed to the rhythm, completely immersed, hair flicking dramatically for flair, not noticing the soft smirk forming behind me.
“Wow…” Joshua’s voice broke my concentration, and I nearly dropped my guitar. I spun around, cheeks instantly flaming.
He leaned casually against the doorway, smirking. “So… this is what you do when you think you’re alone?”
I stammered, trying to play it cool. “I… I was… just practicing!”
Joshua laughed softly, walking toward me. “Practicing for an audience of one?”
I rolled my eyes, but my smile betrayed me. “Maybe…”
Before I could recover, I heard muffled laughter from the
living room. Mia, Zack, and Tara were grinning, peeking through the doorway.
Jayden was crouched behind the couch, phone in hand, whispering, “Ohhh… this is gold. I’m recording this. You’re going on YouTube.”
I froze. “Jayden! What are you doing?!”
He whispered excitedly, waving his phone. “Shh! This is too good to miss. The internet needs this. Don’t worry — it’s going viral.”
Mia laughed, covering her mouth. “You really didn’t see this coming, Lana.”
Zack added, teasing, “Yeah, serenading your husband in front of everyone — priceless.”
Joshua pulled me gently into a hug from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder. “I can’t believe you were singing about me… out loud… like that.”
I squirmed slightly. “I… I wasn’t thinking!”
He smirked, whispering in my ear, “Good. Because you sounded incredible.”
I rolled my eyes but laughed, hiding my blush. “You’re lucky I love you.”
Joshua grinned. “Lucky? Definitely. But I think Jayden just made us famous.”
Jayden gave a victorious thumbs-up from behind the couch. “All in a day’s work. Viral content, check!”
The apartment erupted into laughter, teasing, and playful chaos. Luna barked happily, clearly entertained by all the excitement.
I looked at Joshua, still smirking at me. “You better not post that online,” I warned.
He laughed, holding me close. “Not without your permission… maybe.”
I groaned, burying my face in his chest, but couldn’t hide my smile. Even amidst teasing, recording mishaps, and viral moments, life with Joshua, music, and our crazy group was perfect.
The next morning, I groggily reached for my phone, only to be greeted by a flood of notifications. My eyes widened as I scrolled — our apartment performance had gone viral overnight. Jayden’s “secret” recording of me singing about Joshua had blown up online.
Comments poured in:
“OMG she’s literally singing about her husband? Cute overload!”
“That smirk from Joshua tho… iconic!”
“I need a duet with him now, please!”
I groaned, burying my face in the blanket. “Jayden! I can’t believe you uploaded that!”
He popped his head from the corner, grinning like a proud cat. “Relax! You’re famous now. Viral sensation!”
Zack laughed. “I told you this was gold. You literally sang your husband into internet stardom.”
Mia was scrolling on her phone, snorting. “People are shipping you two hardcore. Like… ‘Lana and Joshua, the ultimate couple goals.’”
Joshua walked into the room, carrying a cup of coffee, smirking at me. “So… I heard my fan club has grown overnight?”
I glared playfully. “Joshua! Don’t you dare make this about you.”
He grinned, plopping down beside me. “Oh, I don’t have to. I already wrote a little something… inspired by your viral performance.”
Before I could react, he picked up his guitar and began strumming a catchy, upbeat rhythm. Then he sang:
"She flips her hair, got me in her spell
Singing all the things she never tells
I’m the one she’s talking ‘bout, yeah that’s me
Tall, a little geeky, but clearly her fantasy
You think you’re in trouble, babe? Nah, it’s true
Every lyric, every note, I’m falling too"
I froze, trying not to laugh as the lyrics mirrored mine so perfectly — but with a Joshua twist.
Jayden’s phone was up immediately, recording again. “This is even better! Two of you, one duet, pure chaos!”
Mia squealed. “Oh my gosh, this is too cute. I can’t take it!”
Zack nudged me. “Yep. He just one-upped your viral
moment.”
Tara rolled her eyes but smiled. “Okay, fine. That was adorable. You two are ridiculous.”
Luna barked happily, hopping around Joshua’s feet, clearly approving the musical showdown.
By the time Joshua finished, we were both laughing, the apartment filled with energy and music. He leaned over, kissing my cheek.
“You’re incredible,” he whispered, grinning. “And now the world knows it too.”
I rolled my eyes but smiled, leaning into him. “Yeah, thanks to your little musical ego moment.”
Joshua chuckled, holding me close. “Always you, always us. But let’s be honest… this duet is fire.”
We laughed together, Jayden cheering from the side and the rest of the group teasing us endlessly. Even with viral chaos, teasing friends, and musical battles, one thing was clear: Joshua and I were unstoppable — and way too much fun.
It started small — a few notifications here and there. But by mid-morning, my phone was buzzing nonstop. I picked it up and groaned.
“Guys… it’s… it’s everywhere,” I said, showing Joshua the screen.
The video had exploded: millions of views, thousands of comments, and people tagging friends, tweeting memes, and making reaction videos.
Joshua peeked over my shoulder, smirking. “Well… I knew I
was charming, but apparently, the internet agrees.”
Someone edited our duet into a dramatic slow-motion montage with hearts floating everywhere.
Memes started appearing: “When your wife sings about you like this…” with Joshua’s smirking face.
One tweet read: “Lana: 1, Joshua: 1, Friends: 100% entertained by this chaos.”
Zack snorted. “Oh man… people are actually obsessed. Look at this one!” He showed me a video of someone lip-syncing Joshua’s playful response lyrics while wearing glasses and waving dramatically.
Mia groaned. “This is getting out of hand. Someone made a
whole TikTok trend with ‘Lana sings Joshua into your heart’!”
Jayden was laughing so hard he nearly dropped his phone. “I TOLD YOU! Viral content! I didn’t know it’d get this wild!”
Tara shook her head, smirking. “You all are ridiculous… but I can’t stop laughing.”
By lunchtime, strangers were recognizing us at the café down the street. “OMG! You’re the duet couple from YouTube!” one girl squealed, snapping a picture.
Joshua waved, grinning, clearly enjoying the attention. “Uh… hi!”
I blushed, trying to hide behind my coffee cup. “Yeah… that’s us…”
Meanwhile, Zack and Tyler were debating creating a choreographed dance to our song in the park. Luna barked loudly, clearly thrilled by the commotion.
We finally retreated to the apartment, collapsing on the couch, exhausted from all the attention.
Joshua laughed, brushing my hair back. “I can’t believe this… the internet is obsessed with us.”
I buried my face in his chest. “I know… it’s crazy. But kinda funny, right?”
He kissed my forehead softly. “Yeah… only we could turn a little private jam session into full-blown chaos. And I love it… as long as I’m with you.”
I smiled, wrapping my arms around him. “Always. Through viral chaos, public attention, and your terrible smirk — always.”
Jayden immediately started planning a follow-up recording, laughing maniacally. “Ohhh… imagine the sequel! More hair flips! More dramatic stares!”
Mia and Zack groaned in unison. “Please no…”
Tara just shook her head, smiling. “I can’t wait to see how this spirals next.”
Even Luna wagged her tail happily, like she knew the adventure wasn’t over yet.
I tiptoed into the living room, making sure the coast was clear. “Okay, I’m alone this time,” I muttered to myself, bouncing slightly to the beat in my head.
I grabbed my notebook and started strumming lightly, letting the music flow as I sang with confidence:
"Living inside a dream
Let's lay where the lovers lie
I put that on my own mama
On my hood
I look fly
I look good
You can't touch my bag
Wish you could
I look fly
I look too good
I strutted across the room, hair swaying, completely absorbed in the lyrics, throwing in dramatic gestures and flair. I was feeling myself—until I noticed a small shadow moving in the corner.
Jayden’s face peeked around the corner, phone in hand, recording. His grin was impossible to miss.
“Jayden! Are you recording me again?!” I exclaimed, half laughing, half groaning.
He shrugged innocently. “What? You said it yourself… this is gold! The internet will love it!”
I groaned, flopping dramatically onto the couch. “Seriously? I just wanted a private jam session!”
Before I could stop him, the group had gathered, drawn by the commotion.
Zack whistled. “Ohhh… okay, Lana. That’s fire. I’m shook.”
Mia laughed, covering her mouth. “Another viral moment waiting to happen!”
Tara rolled her eyes, smirking. “You’re making this way too easy for Jayden.”
Luna barked excitedly, running circles around the room, clearly hyped by the energy.
Joshua stepped in from the kitchen, coffee in hand, raising an eyebrow. “Wow… someone’s feeling themselves today.”
I threw my hands up in mock defense. “I was… practicing! I didn’t know anyone was watching!”
He smirked, leaning against the doorway. “Uh-huh. Sure… practicing. Looks like you’re about to break the internet again.”
I laughed, shaking my head, feeling the warmth of the chaos surrounding me. Even with Jayden’s sneaky recording, Joshua’s teasing, and the friends laughing, it was exactly the kind of energy I loved.
Jayden pouted playfully. “Come on, Lana. Admit it… you look too good, and everyone needs to see this.”
I groaned, covering my face but laughing. “Fine… but I’m
gonna need a cut of the views when this goes viral!”
Joshua chuckled, kissing my forehead. “Always you, making every little thing feel like a performance… and I love it.”
I leaned into him, smiling. “And you love being my audience.”
He grinned, pulling me closer. “Always. Front row, every time.”
Even Luna barked happily, as if agreeing, and for a moment, the apartment was full of music, laughter, and chaos — the perfect combination.
The apartment was quiet, except for the faint hum of the city outside. I was sitting on the edge of the bed, strumming lightly on my guitar, reviewing some lyrics for tonight’s live performance. Joshua was pacing back and forth near the window, headphones on, nodding to his own beat.
Then he started rapping, voice confident and loud, filling the bedroom with energy:
"Baby, you a star, strike, pose (right)
When I'm, with you, everything goes
Come and, put that, on my soul
'Rari crown, wrist, froze
Drip, on the way home
In this world, concrete flowers grow
Heartache, she only doin' what she know
Weekends, get it poppin' on the low
Better days comin' for sure"
I watched him, impressed by how naturally the rhythm and flow came to him. Every word hit with confidence, and the energy in the room was electric.
Through the slightly open door, I noticed Zack leaning against the hallway wall, grinning. “Whoa… okay, Joshua! That’s fire. You actually got it.”
Mia peeked her head in too, whispering, “This is gonna slay tonight, I can feel it!”
Jayden, of course, had his phone ready. “Guys… this needs recording. This is content gold.”
Joshua noticed none of them, too absorbed in the flow, rapping louder, practicing the enunciation and energy for the live audience later.
He stopped for a moment, nodding, rewinding the beat in his head. “Okay… okay… let’s tighten that last line. Better days
coming for sure… yeah, gotta hit it strong.”
I strummed along, helping him find the right rhythm for the musical accompaniment. “That sounds amazing, Joshua. You’re gonna crush it tonight.”
He grinned without looking at me. “We’re gonna crush it. Just wait.”
The bedroom was alive with practice, anticipation, and creative energy. No distractions, no kissing, just music, focus, and confidence. It felt like a private little performance, sharpening the song for tonight’s live show.
By the time we finally paused to catch our breath, the excitement was tangible. The live show wasn’t just a
performance — it was going to be a statement.
Joshua looked at me, a spark of determination in his eyes. “Tonight… it’s ours.”
I nodded, smiling. “Yeah… ours.”
The bedroom hummed with possibility, the music a promise of what was to come.
The venue was buzzing. Lights glowed softly over the crowd, the hum of conversation mixing with excitement and anticipation. Backstage, I clutched my guitar and looked at Joshua, who was bouncing lightly on the balls of his feet, headphones around his neck, completely in the zone.
“Ready?” I asked, heart pounding.
Joshua grinned. “Always. Let’s do this.”
The announcer’s voice rang through the speakers. “Give it
up for Lana and Joshua!”
The crowd erupted in cheers. My hands were shaking slightly as I walked onto the stage, but seeing Joshua standing there, focused and confident, instantly grounded me.
The lights dimmed slightly, and we began. Joshua started the first verse of his rap confidently, voice strong, every word crisp:
"Baby, you a star, strike, pose (right)
When I'm, with you, everything goes
Come and, put that, on my soul
'Rari crown, wrist, froze
Drip, on the way home
In this world, concrete flowers grow
Heartache, she only doin' what she know
Weekends, get it poppin' on the low
Better days comin' for sure"
I strummed along, joining in with harmony and backup vocals, letting the guitar blend with his rhythm.
The crowd was electric. Hands waved in the air, and phones
recorded every second.
One group of fans shouted, “WE LOVE YOU GUYS!”
Another waved a handmade sign: “LANA & JOSHUA = ICONIC”
Even the people in the back were singing along, shouting encouragement. The energy was contagious, and I couldn’t stop grinning at Joshua as he owned the stage.
From the side of the stage, Zack, Mia, Jayden, and Tara were dancing and cheering loudly. Jayden was waving his phone around, filming snippets, while Zack mimicked some of Joshua’s gestures playfully.
“You’re killing it!” Mia shouted, laughing.
“I told you he’d crush it!” Zack added, nudging me.
I laughed, feeling the warmth of our little group’s support while keeping my focus on the music and Joshua beside me.
As the song built to the final chorus, the crowd erupted again. Joshua’s rap seamlessly transitioned into our combined vocals, harmonizing perfectly. The audience sang along with us, clapping, cheering, and waving their hands.
The energy was overwhelming — in the best possible way. Joshua and I exchanged a quick smile mid-song, both of us thinking the same thing: this was ours. Every note, every word, every beat — ours.
When the song ended, the crowd went wild. Screams, applause, and cheers filled the venue. Joshua and I took a quick bow, waving and laughing, exhilarated.
Backstage, the group swarmed us, hugging, teasing, and celebrating.
“You were amazing!” Jayden shouted.
“Seriously, that was epic!” Mia added.
Zack grinned. “Yep… front row chaos, and I loved every second.”
I looked at Joshua, still catching his breath, his smile wide. “We did it,” I said softly.
He nodded, brushing a strand of hair from my face. “We
did… together.”
The night was alive, loud, and perfect — a milestone not just in music, but in us.
After the concert, the energy was still buzzing in the air. The lights of the venue faded behind us as we piled into Joshua’s van, the group shouting and laughing over the excitement.
“I still can’t believe how insane that crowd was!” Zack exclaimed, stretching out in the back seat.
“They were so into it,” Mia added, bouncing in her seat. “And the way Joshua rapped… I’m telling you, people are gonna remember that for weeks.”
Jayden, of course, had his phone glued to his hand, scrolling
rapidly. “You guys… check this out. The video is everywhere. People are remixing clips, adding slow-motion effects, fan edits… it’s crazy.”
I leaned over to look. One compilation clip of our duet had already racked up hundreds of thousands of views. Comments ranged from “Iconic couple goals!” to “Lana is literally singing her husband into my heart!”
Joshua smirked, glancing at me. “Guess that smirk I gave you backstage is officially famous now.”
I laughed, nudging him. “Ugh… stop teasing. People are gonna think you’re conceited!”
We pulled up at our favorite late-night café, the one with the
neon lights and the ridiculous dessert menu, and the group spilled out, still buzzing from the show.
“I need a slice of the biggest cake you have,” Jayden said dramatically.
Zack grinned. “And we need some kind of toast to the viral chaos!”
Mia rolled her eyes playfully. “You all are ridiculous, but fine. Let’s celebrate.”
Tara laughed. “Honestly… this is peak internet fame meets our usual chaos. I’m living for it.”
Luna hopped happily into the café, tail wagging, ready to join the fun.
While waiting for our desserts, Jayden couldn’t resist showing us the latest comments.
“Lana’s hair flip? Legendary. Joshua’s smirk? Iconic. Entire performance? PERFECTION.”
“If you’re not watching this duet on repeat, are you even alive?”
“Someone make a dance challenge to this song now!!!”
Zack laughed so hard he snorted. “People are actually obsessed! Look at this one — someone tagged me in a meme of me pretending to rap with Joshua. I’m a meme now!”
I groaned but laughed. “This is getting out of hand…”
Joshua shook his head, smirking. “Yeah, but it’s also
hilarious. And kind of… amazing.”
We toasted with sodas, desserts, and lots of laughter. The café staff even started playing our duet in the background, adding to the surreal fun.
“You two make the perfect team,” Mia said, raising her glass. “Seriously, the internet needs more couples like you.”
I leaned against Joshua, smiling. “Thanks… we’ve got an amazing support team too.”
He kissed the top of my head. “Always. And look… even in viral chaos, we stick together.”
The rest of the night was full of laughter, teasing, and celebrating — a perfect mix of music, friendship, and
chaos.
Even as the online world continued to react and comment, we were just enjoying the moment, together.
The café was still buzzing with leftover excitement from the concert and our viral fame. We were all lounging around the table, licking ice cream, joking, and scrolling through the latest online reactions.
Then Mia nudged Zack, smirking. “Okay… we have something to tell everyone.”
Zack’s cheeks flushed slightly, but he grinned. “Yeah… so… we’re going on a date.”
The group froze. For a brief second, all anyone could do
was stare. Then a collective gasp erupted.
“OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!” Jayden shouted, almost spilling his drink.
I laughed so hard I had to hold my stomach. “Wait… you two are dating?! Like… actually dating?!”
Mia nodded, trying to act casual, though a small blush betrayed her. “Yep. Thought we’d make it official tonight.”
Zack chuckled nervously. “We figured… why not? We like each other, and… well, it’s about time.”
Tara’s jaw dropped, then she started clapping slowly. “Finally! Took you long enough!”
Jayden was frantically recording again. “This is going online! Everyone needs to witness this moment!”
Joshua smirked, shaking his head at me. “Looks like we’re not the only couple causing chaos and excitement tonight.”
I laughed, nudging him playfully. “Yeah… but you’ll always be my main star.”
Zack and Mia exchanged shy smiles, clearly thrilled, while the rest of us erupted into teasing.
“First date, huh?” I said, grinning. “You better not mess this up!”
“Don’t worry,” Zack said confidently, squeezing Mia’s hand. “I got this.”
The group spent the rest of the evening teasing, laughing, and celebrating. Luna barked happily, seemingly approving of the new couple.
Even with all the chaos — the viral videos, the teasing, and the constant energy — one thing was clear: the night was filled with love, friendship, and playful drama.
And for once, the OOOOOOOOOOOOOH moments weren’t about Me and Joshua — they belonged to Zack and Mia.
The apartment finally felt peaceful. The chatter, laughter, and chaos of the café and our friends’ teasing had faded into a calm, cozy evening.
Joshua and I sat on the couch, the soft glow of the city lights spilling through the windows. Luna was curled up at our feet, snoring softly, the only other sound in the room.
I leaned against Joshua, resting my head on his shoulder. “I can’t believe tonight… everything. The concert, the viral videos, and even Mia and Zack’s big announcement,” I
whispered.
Joshua wrapped an arm around me, pulling me closer. “Yeah… crazy, huh? But I love that we get to end the night like this. Just you, me… and Luna.”
I smiled, feeling a warmth spread through me. “I’m glad. No cameras, no viral chaos, no teasing. Just us.”
Joshua got up and returned with two glasses of sparkling cider. “To us,” he said softly, handing me one.
“To us,” I echoed, clinking my glass gently against his.
We sipped, savoring the sweetness and the quietness. No distractions, no chaos — just a moment to breathe, to reflect, and to feel grateful for everything we’d built together.
I picked up my guitar and strummed lightly, improvising a soft melody. Joshua hummed along, adding gentle harmonies with his deep, warm voice.
For a while, we simply played and sang, not worrying about an audience, recording, or even hitting the right notes perfectly. The music was ours, and that was enough.
Joshua leaned down, brushing his lips gently against my forehead. “I love you, Lana. Through all the chaos and the calm.”
I smiled, looking up at him. “I love you too. Always.”
The night passed quietly, filled with soft music, whispered
laughter, and shared smiles. The city outside carried on, bright and alive, but inside our apartment, everything was calm, warm, and perfect.
Me and Joshua sat together, wrapped in each other’s arms, hearts full, knowing that no matter what chaos the world threw at us, we always have this — our quiet, perfect moments together.
The doorbell rang, and I could feel my stomach tighten. I already knew who it was before I opened it.
“Hi, Mom,” I said, trying to sound cheerful.
She stepped in, perfectly poised, eyes scanning the apartment like a critical inspector. “Lana,” she said sharply, “I hope you’ve been keeping things… presentable.”
I forced a smile. “Of course, Mom. Come in.”
Her eyes immediately landed on Joshua, who had been quietly fixing his guitar in the corner.
Joshua stood, offering a polite smile. “Hi, ma’am. It’s nice to finally meet you.”
Mom’s lips pressed into a thin line. “So this is the man you married.” Her tone was tight, judgmental, dripping with disapproval.
I swallowed hard. “Yes… Joshua. Mom, this is Joshua.”
Mom looked him up and down, her expression never softening. “I… see. You play music, live in this… apartment. And you expect my daughter to be happy?”
Joshua’s smile stayed polite, but his jaw tightened slightly. “I love your daughter very much, ma’am. That’s all that matters to me.”
Mom raised an eyebrow. “Love is… not enough. There’s stability, ambition… and character. I just hope you understand what it means to marry into this family.”
I could feel the tension in the room, and even Luna seemed uneasy, curling closer to my side.
Joshua stepped closer, keeping his tone calm and respectful. “I understand, ma’am. And I promise you, I will do everything I can to make Lana happy. That’s the most important thing to me.”
Mom huffed, clearly unimpressed. “We’ll see.”
Before I could respond, a faint ping came from the group
chat — Zack had noticed Mom was there first. Jayden texted: “Uh… warning: Lana’s mom is in the building. Brace yourselves.”
Zack responded with a laughing emoji. “This is gonna be fun.”
Mia whispered from the side: “You okay, Lana?”
I nodded, taking a deep breath. “Yeah… I just… need this week to go as smoothly as possible.”
Mom’s critical gaze lingered on Joshua as she set her bags down. I felt a mix of nerves and protectiveness. Joshua’s calm presence was reassuring, but I knew this was going to be a long week.
The apartment, once filled with laughter and music, suddenly felt smaller — every glance, every word from Mom heavy with judgment.
Joshua caught my eye and whispered softly, “Don’t worry, Lana. I’ve got this.”
I nodded, grateful, hoping that love, patience, and a little luck would be enough to survive the week.
Lana’s mom had settled into the apartment like a general inspecting troops. Every glance she gave Joshua felt like a judgmental x-ray. I tried to stay calm, but even I could feel the tension buzzing in the air.
“So,” Mom began, arms crossed as she perched on the edge of the couch, “Joshua… how exactly do you plan to provide stability for Lana? She’s a professional singer — a busy life, unpredictable hours. How will you… manage that?”
Joshua smiled politely, his voice calm and confident.
“Ma’am, I don’t plan to ‘manage’ her. I support her. Whatever she needs, whatever she wants to pursue — I’m there. Together, we make it work.”
Mom raised an eyebrow, unimpressed. “Hmm… and financially? You play music, but… what about long-term security?”
Joshua nodded, his answer measured but firm. “I also teach, produce, and invest carefully. Money is a tool, not a measure of love or commitment. I make sure Lana is taken care of in every way.”
I glanced at him, silently amazed at how he handled her questions without raising his voice.
As the questioning paused, I sat down next to Joshua. He brushed my hair back gently and kissed my forehead softly — a small, loving gesture.
Mom’s lips pressed into a thin line. She huffed audibly. “Hmm. Public displays of affection already? Charming.”
I couldn’t help but chuckle quietly, whispering to Joshua, “You’re not helping your case.”
He smirked, shrugging innocently. “I’m showing her how much I care. Can’t hide it.”
Mom leaned back, crossing her arms more tightly, eyes narrowed. “We’ll see if that affection translates into responsibility and… proper judgment.”
Mom continued, firing off questions like a rapid-fire quiz:
“Do you know how to cook?”
“What would you do if Lana decided to go on tour for six months?”
“Have you ever handled a financial crisis?”
“Do you know how to handle a diva moment?”
Joshua answered each calmly, sometimes with humor, sometimes with sincerity, but never losing composure. Even I had to admire him — he was handling the judgment like a pro.
By the end of the afternoon, Mom hadn’t cracked, but Joshua had passed every “test” without losing patience. She
huffed again, clearly annoyed at herself for being impressed, though she’d never admit it aloud.
Joshua leaned over to me quietly. “See? Not as scary as she seems.”
I smiled, resting my head on his shoulder. “Yeah… but she’s definitely… thorough.”
He kissed my forehead again, ignoring Mom’s sharp huff this time. “Worth it.”
I laughed softly. “Always worth it.”
The tension was still there, but I knew Joshua’s calm confidence — and love — would slowly win her over.
Lana’s mom had been in the apartment for a couple of days, meticulously inspecting everything from the fridge to the living room décor. Joshua and I were walking a careful line, trying to keep things calm… until the friends decided to “help.”
Jayden texted us: “We’re coming over to keep spirits up! Don’t worry, we’re being responsible adults!”
Famous last words.
Within fifteen minutes, the apartment was filled with Mia, Zack, Tara, and Jayden. They arrived with snacks, loud chatter, and an energy level that could power a small city.
Mom’s eyes narrowed the second she heard them. “And who are all these people?”
“Friends!” I said nervously. “Just here to hang out!”
Joshua whispered, “Brace yourself…”
Jayden tried to impress Mom by making coffee for everyone. But instead of the fancy French press he’d bragged about, he somehow spilled half the grounds on the counter… and half on Mom’s pristine white blouse.
Mom gasped, glaring daggers at him. “My blouse!”
Jayden froze. “Uh… it’s… aromatic?”
I groaned, grabbing a towel. “Jayden! Stop talking!”
Luna, excited by the commotion, dashed around the living room, knocking over a small vase. Mom’s eyes widened.
“I see… animals are welcome to destroy things too?” she asked dryly, arms crossed.
Joshua scooped Luna up, apologizing softly. “I’m so sorry, ma’am. She’s just excited by everyone being here.”
Mom huffed, muttering something about lack of control.
Zack, trying to lighten the mood, suggested a mini karaoke session. “Come on, Mom! You have to join us!”
Mom raised an eyebrow. “I’m not here to perform for a group of teenagers!”
Mia jumped in enthusiastically. “We promise, it’ll be fun!”
Before we could stop her, Zack cranked up the speakers, and suddenly the apartment was filled with loud pop music. Mom’s expression went from irritation to sheer horror as Tara grabbed a hairbrush for a microphone, and Jayden started filming.
I buried my face in Joshua’s shoulder. “I’m never letting them in at the same time again.”
By the end of the afternoon, Mom had survived the chaos — barely — but she looked slightly less judgmental. She still
scowled, but her huffs were a little softer.
Joshua whispered to me, grinning: “See? They’re chaotic… but somehow, she’s impressed.”
I shook my head, laughing. “Yeah… impressed in the most terrifying way possible.”
Mom muttered under her breath, glaring at the group: “I do not know how your friends survive this… or how you survive them.”
I smiled, resting my head against Joshua. “We’re a team… chaotic, loud, and slightly destructive… but a team.”
Even with the chaos, it felt like a tiny victory — Joshua had survived Mom’s “inspection,” and somehow we all still made it through alive.
After the group finally cleared out and the apartment drifted back into something resembling peace, the only sounds left were Luna’s soft paws on the floor and Mom’s occasional disapproving sigh from somewhere down the hallway.
I was exhausted. Joshua was exhausted. And Mom… well… Mom was reloading her judgmental energy like it was ammunition.
Joshua caught me sinking onto the couch and slid down beside me, nudging my shoulder with his. “You okay?” he whispered.
“Surviving,” I murmured. “Barely.”
He chuckled, the sound warm and low, and gently tucked a strand of my newly blonde hair behind my ear. “Hey… you handled her, the group, and karaoke Jayden. That’s superhero-tier stuff.”
I smiled—small but real.
He reached for my hand, threading his fingers through mine. “Five minutes,” he whispered. “Just for us. No chaos. No Mom. No Zack trying to freestyle rap about someone’s shoes.”
I let out a tired laugh and leaned into him, resting my head against his chest. His hand slid up to cradle the back of my head, slow and comforting, and the whole room just…
softened.
For a moment, it felt like the world shrank down to the warmth of his voice and the steady beat of his heart under my ear.
He whispered, “I love you, you know. Even when everything around us is loud.”
“I know,” I whispered back, lifting my head to meet his eyes. “I love you too.”
He smiled—quiet, soft, and absolutely meant only for me.
We leaned in, sharing a small, gentle kiss. No theatrics, no crowd, no music. Just us.
But then—
A creak from the hallway.
We froze.
Joshua mouthed, Is someone there?
I mouthed back, I swear if that’s Jayden again—
Then we both saw it.
My mom, Jennifer, standing half-hidden behind the hallway corner.
Not moving.
Not blinking.
Watching like she was observing wildlife at a nature reserve.
Joshua whispered, barely audible, “…she’s literally spying on us.”
I whispered back, “She thinks she’s subtle.”
We pulled apart slightly—not guilty, just… avoiding a lecture
—and Mom slowly retreated behind the wall like a badly animated NPC.
Joshua leaned closer and murmured, “Your mom is terrifying.”
I squeezed his hand. “Welcome to the family, babe.”
He let out a breathy laugh. “I’d face karaoke Jayden again before facing that.”
And even with Mom lurking in spy mode… the moment between us stayed warm, safe, and sweet.
Joshua and I barely had time to scoot an inch apart on the couch before Mom stepped fully into the room, arms crossed so tightly I thought the seams of her blazer might rip.
“So,” she began, voice sharp enough to slice bread. “That’s what you two do when you think no one is watching.”
Joshua blinked. “…sit on a couch?”
I shot him a look like please don’t make this worse.
Mom marched closer, her heels clicking like she practiced the sound for intimidation. “I saw you kissing.”
“Mom,” I groaned, “it was a kiss, not a crime.”
“You’re married,” she snapped, “not unsupervised teenagers.”
Joshua muttered under his breath, “Feels like we are.”
I elbowed him.
Mom caught it anyway. “Joshua, I would like to speak with you.”
He straightened a little, trying to look respectful even though you could practically feel his panic. “Uh… sure. Yes ma’am.”
She turned fully to him, eyes narrowed.
“Why,” she said slowly, “were you kissing my daughter when you know I am trying to determine the nature of your relationship?”
Joshua just stared, visibly trying to figure out if this was a
trick question.
“Because… we’re married?” he said gently.
Mom threw her hands up. “Marriage is not an excuse for constant… affection!”
I pinched the bridge of my nose. “Mom, we’re literally on our couch at home.”
She ignored me and leaned in toward Joshua like she was delivering a final exam.
“So tell me, Joshua,” she said, voice too calm to be safe,
“Why do you think you are good enough for my daughter? Truly.”
Joshua inhaled.
Held it.
Then exhaled slowly.
And he surprised all of us.
He met her eyes and said, with this quiet, steady confidence I swear I’d never seen in him before:
“Because I love her. I respect her. And I’d never hurt her. That’s my answer.”
I felt my heart go warm and soft and gooey.
Mom blinked—actually blinked, like his answer hit her harder than she expected.
Before she could respond, Zack’s voice drifted from the hallway:
“Yo… did we walk in on a boss battle?”
Jayden whispered, “Bro, who’s winning?”
Mia whispered louder, “Not Jennifer.”
Mom spun around. “Out. All of you.”
The whole group scattered like pigeons.
Then she faced Joshua again, slower this time.
More controlled.
“…I’m not saying I approve,” she said, “but that was a respectable answer.”
Joshua nodded politely. “Thank you, ma’am.”
“And stop kissing in shared spaces,” she added, marching away.
“Sure,” Joshua said.
Then as soon as she disappeared, he leaned toward me with a tiny smirk.
“We’re definitely kissing later.”
I shoved him, laughing. “Joshua!”
Mom waited until Joshua stepped into the kitchen before she touched my arm.
“Lana,” she said quietly, too calmly. “Come with me.”
That tone.
The serious one.
My stomach dropped.
We moved into the hallway, away from everyone else. Mom folded her arms, studying my face like she was searching for something she’d missed.
“I need to know,” she said, lowering her voice, “if you are truly happy. Not swept up in music, chaos, or affection—but genuinely happy.”
I didn’t hesitate.
“Yes,” I said. “I am.”
She pursed her lips. “He’s… different than I imagined for you.”
“I know,” I replied softly. “But he’s patient. He listens. He believes in me even when I doubt myself.”
Mom sighed, rubbing her temple. “I worry. That’s what mothers do.”
“I know,” I said gently. “But I chose him. And I’d choose him again.”
She studied me for a long moment, then nodded once. “Alright. I won’t interfere. I’ll… observe.”
Which somehow sounded worse.
That night, I slipped into our bedroom to rehearse, needing music like oxygen after all that emotional intensity. I turned on the track softly and started singing, confident and warm, letting the lyrics carry me: "It's crazy how you came and saved me
You're my fallen angel (fallen angel)
I wouldn't change a thing, oh, baby
Keep pulling on the strings of my heart
If I hold you down, just say you'll stay."
Joshua leaned against the dresser, watching me with a smile that made my chest feel light.
“Come on,” I said, grabbing his hands. “Help me practice the choreography.”
“I am not a dancer,” he laughed.
“You are tonight.”
I spun him gently, laughing as we moved around the room, practicing steps and half-making them up, pulling him into a playful twirl. He stumbled, recovered, and shook his head.
“This is dangerous,” he joked. “I could hurt someone.”
I laughed, singing the last line again and pulling him closer—
And then.
The door creaked.
We froze.
Slowly, I turned my head.
Mom. Standing in the doorway. Watching us dance.
Joshua immediately let go of my hands like he’d been caught committing a felony.
Mom blinked. Once. Twice.
“…Are you rehearsing,” she asked carefully, “or… entertaining yourselves?”
I groaned. “Mom—”
Joshua cleared his throat. “Dance practice, ma’am. Strictly choreography.”
She looked at the music, then at us, then sighed deeply.
“…At least you’re productive,” she muttered.
Then, without another word, she turned and walked away.
The door shut.
Joshua exhaled. “I think I just aged ten years.”
I collapsed onto the bed laughing. “She walked in on us dancing and somehow that was still worse than the kiss.”
Joshua shook his head, smiling. “Your life is unbelievable.”
I smiled back. “But you’re in it.”
And somehow—even with my mom lurking nearby—it still felt right.
I should’ve known we wouldn’t get away with anything.
Not five minutes after Mom walked out of our bedroom, I heard Zack’s voice echo from the kitchen.
“WAIT—hold up. Why does Jennifer look like she just walked in on a crime scene?”
Joshua froze mid-step. I slowly turned to him.
“…She saw us.”
He winced. “Define saw.”
Before I could answer, Mia leaned over the counter, eyes wide. “Saw you what?”
Jayden popped up out of nowhere. “Please tell me she didn’t catch another kiss. I need details for context.”
I groaned. “She walked in while I was singing and dragging Joshua into dance practice.”
There was a half-second of silence.
Then—
“OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!”
The entire group erupted at once.
Zack slapped the counter. “BRO GOT PULLED INTO CHOREO IN FRONT OF HER MOM???”
Jayden gasped dramatically. “That’s worse than a kiss. That’s performance-level intimacy.”
Joshua buried his face in his hands. “Why does everyone
know immediately?!”
Mia laughed so hard she had to sit down. “Wait—wait—was it romantic dancing or awkward flailing?”
“It was cute!” I defended. “He was trying!”
Zack grinned. “Oh my gosh. Jennifer caught you singing fallen angel lyrics while dancing with her son-in-law. That woman is NEVER recovering.”
Joshua looked up. “She didn’t yell.”
Tara blinked. “That’s worse.”
Jayden nodded solemnly. “That means she’s processing.”
Mom chose that exact moment to walk past the kitchen.
The room went dead silent.
She paused, glanced at the group, then at Joshua.
“…Rehearsals should be scheduled,” she said coolly. “Not spontaneous.”
Then she walked away.
The second she disappeared—
“BROOOOOOOOOOOO,” Zack yelled, “YOU JUST GOT SCOLDED FOR DANCING.”
Joshua laughed despite himself. “This is my life now, huh?”
I slid next to him, squeezing his hand. “Yep. Welcome to the chaos.”
Jayden already had his phone out. “Title of the group chat: Jennifer Walked In.”
Joshua groaned. “Please don’t.”
Too late.
But even with the teasing, the laughter, and my mom lurking like a judgmental shadow, I felt okay.
Because no matter who found out, who watched, or who judged—
Joshua was still right there with me.
The morning sunlight poured into the kitchen, soft and warm. The table was already crowded—Zack half-asleep, Mia scrolling on her phone, Jayden poking at his cereal, Tara sipping coffee like it was her lifeline.
I sat at the end of the table, wrapped in a hoodie, my blonde hair twisted into a cute little bun. I cradled my mug of hot chocolate with both hands, letting the steam fog my glasses slightly as I took a slow sip.
Peaceful. Finally.
