There once was a baby elephant named Poppi. She had the softest gray ears and the biggest, kindest heart She lived at the edge of a sunny meadow where butterflies danced and birds sang just for fun. Every morning, Poppi loved to explore, especially when something bright
caught her eye.
One day, tied gently to a wooden fence, Poppi spotted the most beautiful red balloon she had ever seen. "Oh my!" Poppi trumpeted softly. "You're the prettiest thing I've ever seen."
She took the balloon through the meadow, past the pond, and even to her
favorite shady tree.
Wherever Poppi went, the balloon followed,
making her smile bigger than ever.
But one afternoon, Poppi wandered beyond the meadow and noticed something different. Nearby was a small Children's hospital, painted with cheerful colors but quieter than the meadow.
Through the windows, Poppi saw children resting in their beds. Some looked tired, some looked sad, and some stared out the window, wishing for something happy. Poppi felt a gentle tug in her heart.
She walked closer and saw one little child point at the balloon. The child's face lit up with a smile brighter than the sun. Poppi realized something important then. The red balloon didn't just make her happy. It could make others happy too.
That night, Poppi thought very hard.
She loved her balloon. Letting it go would be hard. But her Papa Elephant had always told her,
"The greatest joy comes from giving, not keeping."

"Poppi and the Red Balloon"
I wrote this book to introduce children to the mission of The Red Balloon Project, a nonprofit organization that creates unforgettable birthday celebrations for critically ill children and their families across North Carolina. As someone who has been involved with The Red Balloon Project for many years and now serves as Executive Director, I have witnessed firsthand how a simple act of kindness can bring hope during difficult times.
My experience as a local titleholder within the Miss America Opportunity gave me a platform to share this mission with communities across North Carolina. Through Poppi and the Red Balloon, I hope to inspire the next generation to serve others, spread joy, and discover that even the smallest act of kindness can make a lasting difference in someone's life.
