Introduction, Continuity, and Change
This is Charles. He moved here (China) from Britain in 1837 at the age of
17. Charles continued the use of Opium when he moved to China, but in
1838 when Opium was banned by the Manchu, he changed from being an
Opium user to an Opium dealer because he knew he could make money
selling. After the Opium wars from 1839-1860, the British continued to
maintain major trading rights allowing Charles to continue selling Opium.

POV
As an Opium dealer in the 1800s, Charles felt ecstatic
that the British won the Opium Wars because this helped
him have the ability to continue making money by selling
Opium. The Manchu could not ban Opium as long as the
British continued to enforce the unequal treaties.

1st Best Day
Charles was experiencing a great life by making money off of
Opium. He was a wealthy man, but Charles was very
unhappy. In China, Christian missionaries were not allowed
and Charles's girlfriend was a missionary. In 1844, China
was forced to allow Christian Missionaries and Charles was
finally reunited with his girlfriend. This was one of the best
day of Charles' life.

1st Worst Day
Oh no! It's 1848 and there is chaos in China. Charles and Elizabeth
are forced to move to this village while the Taipang rebellion is
occurring. Later, after returning to their original home in China,
they are saddened to figure out that some of their closest friends
were killed while participating in the rebellion. Over 20 million
people were killed during this rebellion. This was one of the worst
days that Charles faced during his stay at China. Charles lived the
next two years in despair.

It's the end of 1851 and Charles and Elizabeth
are starting to get tired of where they currently
live. They decide to move to North China (hint
hint) to gather a new experience together.

Comparison between a Sepoy soldier in India to
a British Opium dealer in China (Charles)
A couple of years later in 1857, Charles heard news of the
rebellion that was going on in India. The Sepoy rebellion
started because Indian soldiers that were recruited by the
British were tired of the way they were being treated. The
British were forcing Sepoy soldiers to open cow intestine
sacks containing gun powder with their mouths and the
Sepoys finally had had enough. While a Sepoy soldier was
battling in India against the British, Charles and Elizabeth
were living a high quality life with their fellow British people
in China. This rebellion impacted Charles because he could
not afford the expense of cotton suit when the prices went
up. Even though Charles knew what the British were doing
was wrong in both China and India, he continued to live his
life selling Opium and making money.

2nd Best Day
It's 1861 and China is trying to reform. Charles wants to try and stop being a drug dealer, but the
jobs in China have very harsh conditions and little pay. Charles decides to send a letter to his
parents asking them to support him and Elizabeth. They agree to send Charles money as long as
he marries Elizabeth. Elizabeth feels that she isn't ready for marriage, but she marries Charles in
order for them to obtain money from his family. Charles and Elizabeth happily married 2 weeks
later. Now, with all the chaos the reforms in China are causing, Charles decides to take Elizabeth
on a honeymoon to Japan.

3rd Best Day
China had long been known as the Silver Drain. Now, with Britain having major trading
rights over China, large amounts of silver were being traded for Britain's Opium.
Charles' parents sold and traded Opium, so Charles received 30 lbs. of silver one day.
This was a great day for Charles!

2nd Worst Day
Charles and Elizabeth ended up growing old together
until 1894. In 1894, Elizabeth was killed in the start of
the Sino-Japanese war as a casualty. Charles didn't
know how to handle his life anymore.

3rd Worst Day
Charles lived in northern China in 1895-1900. His life finally started
to become normal after ELizabeth's tragic death. Charles knew he
would die soon, but he didn't know if he wanted to leave Earth just
yet. He felt that he needed to do something with his life for
Elizabeth's sake. Charles died in 1900 at age 79 when the Boxer
Uprising occured in Northern China. High officials of the Qing court
wanted nothing to do with the British. Charles, being British, was
shown no mercy and was killed in his own bed. This may have not
been the worst thing that happened in Charles life, but he did end
his life without having a purpose.
