Once upon a time, there lived a young girl
named Anna, who's birthday fell on Halloween.
Every year, Anna would get lots of presents and
sweets from her friends. This year, Anna ate
too much sweets and got a stomach ache.
"No more sweets for you Anna! We're taking
you to a doctor", said Anna's mom.

At the doctor's office, Anna starts to learn about
the digestive system and why she has a stomach
ache.
"You see Anna, when you eat, the digestive system
in your body takes in the food, digests it, and
excretes the remaining waste from your body",
says the Doctor.
"But how doctor?" asks Anna.

"Well, first, when you eat the food, your mouth
starts the process of breaking down food. It
uses your teeth and tongue to mechanically
break down the food by chewing. But it also
uses your saliva which is filled with water and
enzymes to chemically break down the food",
explained the doctor.
"Ooohh, what happens next doctor?", asked
Anna enthusiastically.

"Once your food is broken up and softened with
saliva, it is swallowed and enters the
esophagus. Your esophagus is a long tube that
connects your mouth to your stomach. When
food enters your esophagus, it contracts and
relaxes, slowly moving your food along until it
reaches your stomach" said the doctor.
Anna seemed very interested about the
digestive system so she quietly listened.

"Your stomach is a major organ in the digestive
system. It holds the food and churns it", said the
doctor.
Anna became curious, "How does it churn the food,
doctor?", she asked.
"Well Anna, your stomach has a lining that contains
cells which produce digestive enzymes and acids.
Those acids and enzymes further break down the
food", continued the doctor.

"Then it the job of the small intestine", said the
doctor.
"This is where most of the digestion happens,
right doctor?", asked Anna.
"Well, yes Anna. You're a smart girl. In the
small intestine, all the nutrients from the food
passed from the stomach is absorbed. Once the
nutrients is absorbed, it enters the
bloodstream."
