¿Alguna vez has mirado hacia arriba y te has preguntado cuán lejos está realmente esa gran y brillante bola de fuego llamada Sol?

Have you ever looked up and wondered how far away that big, bright ball of fire called the Sun really is?

Parece que está justo ahí, iluminando nuestro patio trasero, pero la verdad es mucho más sorprendente. Maribel es una niña muy curiosa a la que le encanta contemplar las estrellas y, hoy, tiene una pregunta gigantesca:

It looks like it’s right there, lighting up our backyard, but the truth is much more surprising. Maribel is a very curious girl who loves gazing at the stars, and today, she has a gigantic question:

How long would it take us to reach the Sun if we set off right now?

Por suerte, tiene a su amigo robótico, Carlos. Él tiene todas las respuestas.

Carlos le explica a Maribel que el Sol está increíblemente lejos. Si Maribel pudiera subirse a un coche y conducir a 100 km/h sin detenerse nunca, ¡tardaría entre 170 y 176 años en llegar!

Carlos explains to Maribel that the Sun is incredibly far away. If Maribel could get into a car and drive at 100 km/h without ever stopping, it would take her between 170 and 176 years to get there!

Carlos hace destellar sus luces y muestra un número enorme en su pantalla: 150.000.000. Esa es la distancia promedio, en kilómetros, entre la TIERRA y el SOL. Carlos explica que esta distancia varía ligeramente a lo largo del año, ya que nuestra órbita no es un círculo perfecto, sino más bien ligeramente elíptica; es como si la TIERRA y el SOL estuvieran bailando un vals. 

Carlos flashes his lights and displays a massive number on his screen: 150,000,000. That is the average distance, in kilometers, between the EARTH and the SUN. Carlos explains that this distance varies slightly throughout the year, since our orbit is not a perfect circle, but rather slightly elliptical; it is as if the EARTH and the SUN were dancing a waltz.
