Aspendos is home to one of the best-preserved Roman-era theatres not only in Turkiye but in the entire Mediterranean world. The theatre's size is remarkable: the Aspendos Amphitheatre has a seating capacity of 15,000. Considering its size in ancient times, isn't that enormous? On the other hand, this theatre boasts a truly magnificent acoustic system. The acoustic system, the result of a highly successful architectural design, rivals the acoustic systems of many theatres built in modern times. Examining the inscriptions found in the Aspendos Amphitheatre reveals that this architectural marvel is the work of the architect Zeno.
According to legend, the king of Aspendos announced that he would marry his daughter to the person who had done the most beneficial work for the city's people. Upon hearing this news, many people began constructing buildings they believed would benefit the city. However, two works by two architect brothers, who would compete for years, stood out above the others: the theatre and the aqueducts.
The king first inspected the aqueducts. The structure was truly beautiful and functional. Bringing water from distant lands and supplying the entire city of Aspendos, the aqueducts impressed the king.
However, he had to make a fair decision. Therefore, although his heart was set onchoosing the aqueducts, he set out to see the theatre building as well.
The king was amazed by the grandeur of the theater. However, the theatre was impressive not only for its size but also for its acoustic system, which was far ahead of its time.
