Hi everyone! My name is Rufus the Robot. Come with me to learn about the Italian prisoners of war camp in Hereford, Texas! I’ll be showing you around and telling you what you need to know! This is Rongo! Look for him in each picture. 

In Hereford, Texas there is a war camp which was active from 1943 to 1946. The camp was home to about 5,000 Italian prisoners and 750 American military personnel. This is the second largest Italian camp in the United States! 

The US department of war announced the making of the camp on June, 30 1942. However, they started building it in July! The camp cost around $2 million to build! 

Prisoners were brought into camp because of their political opinions and Hereford needed to build to make it a nicer and more functional place. 

Built in 1945, the chapel stands to this day as a memorial for the 5 Italians who died in the camp. Due to degrading over time, the church was restored in 1987 and is now open for people to visit and pay their respects.
