This book is dedicated to all the adventurous students and citizens who celebrate and preserve the vibrant spirit and history of Ashland.

Colonel Poage loved his new home. One evening, he was studying a massive, heavy map of the Kentucky territory. As he leaned closely over the table, the heavy wooden map stand cracked. The giant map crashed down, trapping him underneath!
Colonel Poage loved his new home. One evening, he was studying a massive, heavy map of the Kentucky territory. As he leaned closely over the table, the heavy wooden map stand cracked. The giant map crashed down, trapping him underneath!
When his brothers lifted the heavy map, they discovered something incredible. Colonel Poage was completely unharmed, but he was entirely flat! He was now no thicker than a piece of parchment. He quickly realized he could slide under doors and float on the breeze blowing off the Ohio River.
Today, the settlement of Poage Landing has grown into the modern city of Ashland. Paper Poage has spent the last two centuries resting quietly inside a history book. Now, he is ready to see how much his town has changed. Because he is flat, he is the perfect size to slide right into your school folder.
Colonel George Poage’s first stop was a simple, sturdy log cabin in what is now Central Park. This is where the Poage family built their very first shelter after arriving in the wilderness in 1799. To Paper Poage, seeing the original cabin is like looking at a picture of his family's first home in Kentucky!
Nearby, also in Central Park, Paper Poage visited the ancient Indian Burial Mounds. These mysterious mounds tell us about the early people who lived here long before the Poage family. Standing near them makes Paper Poage feel very small, connected to a long story that started thousands of years ago.
