
IMPORTANT GROUPS AND PEOPLE
1) The Monuments Men
The monuments men were a group of experts (museum workers, artists, architects) who joined the military to protect and recover art during WWII. They worked in dangerous areas to save paintings, sculptures, buildings, and historical objects.
2) Joseph Goebbels
Goebbels was the Nazi Minister of propaganda. He controlled posters, films, radio, newspapers, and speeches. He used propaganda to spread Nazi beliefs and convince people to support Hitler.
3) Adolf Hitler
Hitler was the leader of Nazi Germany. He believed only certain types of art were “good” and used propaganda to attack modern art. He also ordered the theft of art from other countries.
4) Nazi soldiers and Officials
Soldiers and officials carried out orders to steal art from museums, churches, and families. Propaganda helped justify these actions.
5) European citizens
They are people living in the countries that were invaded by Germany. Their art, culture, and history were targeted by propaganda and theft.





TIMELINE
1933: Hitler becomes leader of Germany. Propaganda becomes a major tool to control the population.
1933–1937: Nazis begin removing modern art from German museums. Propaganda posters and speeches call it degenerate.
1937: The “Degenerate Art Exhibition” opens in Munich. It uses propaganda to mock modern art and convince people it is dangerous or worthless.
1939: WWII begins. Propaganda increases to support Nazi invasions and justify stealing art.
1939–1943: As Germany invades more countries, Nazi leaders steal millions of artworks. Propaganda helps convince people that Germany supposedly deserves this art.
1943: The Allies create the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives program: the Monuments Men.
1944–1945: The Monuments Men follow Allied troops into Europe. They find stolen art hidden in salt mines, castles, and warehouses.
1945 and after: The Monuments Men return stolen art to countries and families. Historians study Nazi propaganda to understand how it influenced people.

LOCATIONS INVOLVED
Germany: It was the main center for Nazi propaganda. Posters, films, and speeches were produced here. Museums were “cleaned” of art the Nazis didn’t like.
Occupied Countries:
France: Paris museums and Jewish families’ collections were heavily looted.
Belgium & Netherlands: Churches and homes lost important artworks.
Poland: Cultural objects were destroyed or stolen.
Italy: Renaissance art and historic buildings were at risk.
Hidden storage sites:
Salt mines in Germany and Austria: Deep underground, Nazis hid thousands of stolen artworks.
Castles and country estates: Used as secret storage for stolen art and propaganda materials.
Allied collecting points:
Places in Germany where Monuments Men sorted, photographed, and returned recovered art.
