Nancy Reagan married Ronald Reagan on March 4, 1952, in a quiet, private ceremony at the Little Brown Church in the San Fernando Valley, California, a moment that marked the beginning of a 52-year love story described as one of the most intense and devoted in American presidential history. Following a two-year courtship that began when she sought his help in clearing her name from a Hollywood blacklist, the actress, then known as Nancy Davis, committed herself entirely to her husband, often stating that her life "really began" with their marriage. Known to the public for her loving "gaze" at her husband, Nancy was his closest friend, fiercest protector, and constant support through his transition from actor to California governor and eventually to the 40th President of the United States. Their relationship was marked by a deep, devotion, with the couple famously swapping love letters, holding hands, and never taking each other for granted, ultimately surviving the strain of public life, an assassination attempt, and the heartache of his later Alzheimer’s disease.

He recovered fully and was back to work within two weeks, while Hinckley was later found not guilty by reason of insanity.
