I dedicate this to John Green. He taught me a lot I know about social studies and he is the goat. We watch his videos all the time and they are great. I also dedicate this book to CC Knox for inventing the butter theroy and her bribing skills during the Silk Road.

My name is Mr. Longbottom. Lets go and explore!
Geography
In social studies we learned about lots of different things that are geography related. We learned how to use latitude and longitude lines to find absolute location on a map. We also learned about cardinal dierctions. Cardinal dierctions are north, south, east, and west which you see on a compass. Another thing we learned about was natural resources. Natural resources are materials found in nature that also come directly from the Earth. Some examples of natural resources is water that we drink or the air that we breathe.

These trees and this water are both examples of natural resources!
Economics

Economics is the way people buy or exchange goods or services and its also a way people make money and live. We learned ways to measure an economy and we were able to tell if a nation is developed or still developing. One other very important thing we talked about was the different types of economies. Each country has a differnet type of economy. There is traditional, market, command, and mixed economies. Since we live in the United States, we have a mixed economy which means the government AND people share decision making.

Before a book gets to your shelf, a tree, a writer, and a big machine all work together.
Government
The governemnt is a group of people who make rules and decisions to keep a community, state, or country safe and running smoothly. There is lots of different governments. We listened to an awesome song to remember them. Some of those governments are democracy, monarchy, dictatorship, and oligarchy. North Korea is an example of a dictatorship because there is one person (a dictator) who holds all the power.

This is United States congress. It's where our laws get discussed and made.
Religion
In social studies we learned about all of the different religions around the world. There is 5 major religions. Those religion are Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. Each religion is unique in their own way by having their own Holy book, God, and place of worship. During this unit we got to make a song all about these religions.

This is a church. It's the place of worship for Christians!
River Civilizations
River civilizations were the very first communities, starting over thousands of years ago. River civilizations were communites where people lived together and they all started next to big rivers. The 3 river civilizations are Eygpt, Mesopotamia, and Indus Valley. We did two big projects over the civilizations. One of them was where we got to build a Ziggurat, which is a temple from Mesopotamia. The other thing we got to do was mummify a chicken. We used lots of salt to dry it out and then we wrapped it in fabric to mimic how the Eygptians did it.

This where the Eygptians put tombs with mummies inside!
