It was another day on the plantation. Peggy and her family had to get up early to work.

Peggy helped her mother carry water while her father worked in the fields. Peggy’s older sister was busy feeding the animals. Everyone was tired.

One night, Peggy overheard her parents whispering to each other. “We need to leave tonight,” her father said.

Peggy was curious. “Where are we going?” she asked. “To find freedom,” her mother replied as she knelt down to comfort Peggy.

“But how are we going to get to freedom?” asked Peggy. “Through the underground railroad. It’s a secret path that helps slaves like us travel to freedom and safety,” her father explained. “There will be safe places for us stay at and kind helpers,” her mother added.

Later that night, Peggy and her family snuck out into the dark woods. “We must not get caught, or else we’ll be returned to the plantation!” Peggy’s father quietly said.

Peggy was scared. She could hear twigs snapping and leaves crunching beneath their feet.

Suddenly, they heard the sound of horses and hid behind the trees. “Where are they?” a man shouted. “We must keep going until we find them!” said another man. Peggy and her family stayed hidden until the riders passed.

Once the danger passed, they kept walking until they reached a small house. A woman opened the door and gave a warm smile. “Hello, my name is Harriet Tubman. Please, come in. You are safe here.”
