INTRODUCTION:
During World War 2, many brave people stepped forward to help their countries. Women joined military groups, worked in factories, flew airplanes, and cared for injured soldiers. Even though women faced discrimination and unfair treatment, they continued to help the war effort. Their hard work and courage changed history forever.

WHO:
During WWII, women joined special military groups to help the United States. Two important groups were the WASPs and the WAVES. The WASPs, which stands for Women Air Force Service Pilots, were female pilots who transported and tested aircraft. Although they weren't allowed to fight, the work was very important. The WAVES, or Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service, were women who worked for the Unisted States Navy. Members of the WAVES worked as nurses, mechanics, radio operators, and office workers. Both groups showed that women were capable of handling difficult jobs during war. AG

IMPORTANT WOMEN:
Some women became famous for their leadership. One important woman was Jacqueline Cochran, who helped organize the WASPs and became one of the most successful female pilots. Another important woman was Oveta Culp Hobby, the first director of the Women's Army Corps (WAC). "Rosie the Riveter" became a famous symbol representing women in factories, building airplanes, tanks, and weapons. These women helped prove women could succeed in jobs that had previously been done mostly by men.

WHAT:
Women became involved in WWII because the military and factories needed more workers, and millions of men left to fight overseas. Their contributions helped keep the country strong during the war and helped the Allies win. Women proved they could handle difficult and dangerous jobs just as well as men. After the war, many women wanted independence, and their success helped shift people's opinions about women and opened new opportunities for the future.

WHEN:
World War 2 lasted from 1939 to 1945, but the US joined officially in 1941 after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Soon after, women began joining military groups like WAVES and WASPs. The WAVES program was created in 1942, and WASPs officially began in 1943. By the end of the war, women became an important part of the US workforce and military support system.
