Once upon a time, there was a Toucan named Thomas...
Thomas has a really large beak.
It is very colorful and is used for many different things
like eating, fighting, and to be intimidating.

Thomas lives in the tropical rainforests in Costa Rica.
It is very hot and has a lot of rainfall so there are many
plants and animals that live here too.

Here are some of Thomas's many neighbors....

This is where Thomas sleeps at night.....

He uses his long beak for eating his favorite food:
Fruit!!!
Here you can see him reaching for some papayas really
high up in a tree.

He uses it for fighting with other Toucans.
Go! Thomas! Go!

But he mostly just uses it for showing off.
"Hiiiii," says Thomas.

One day, while Thomas was eating some papaya,
The tree that he was sitting in started to fall all of a
sudden.
Thomas was so scared he took off in flight, but started
to get caught in the branches of the tree.

As the tree slowly collapsed threw the thick canopy
Thomas cried, "Help!!!!
He was trying to call to his friends in the jungle.
"Help me!!!!" cried Thomas.

Luckily, a friendly Capuchin was close enough to hear
Thomas's plead for help and sprang into action.
The monkeys look up to the birds to find food so he
knew he had to at least help out.

When all hope was lost by Thomas the friendly Capuchin
was able to reach him just in time to jump out of the
falling tree.
"Thank you so much!" said Thomas to the monkey.
"No problem friend. I wonder why the tree fell in the
first place though?" said the monkey.
"I'm curious as well. Why don't we go look around and
see if we can figure out whats going on?" said Thomas.

So Thomas flew up.
And up. And up. And up.
All the way up until he saw a big empty space in the
forests where there were no trees.
Thomas was confused so he flew down to the area to
get a closer look.

As Thomas flew closer, he saw the devastating effects of
deforestation.
"Oh my god....this is horrible...where am I going to
sleep tonight?"
"This needs to stop before it gets any worse" said
Thomas.

When Thomas returns to the forest without a tree to
nest in, the friendly Capuchin decides to let him sleep
with the monkeys for the night.

The next morning, the trees began to fall again nearly
crushing Thomas in his sleep.
And it was at this moment that the animals knew who
was cutting down the trees: The Humans!!!

"*gasp!* The Humans?!?!" cried the monkeys in
response.
"But why would the humans want to cut down our
tree's?!?! Some of them are so nice to us."

"The pet us and scratch our bellies, they nurture us
while we are little, and they even give us juice and lets
us stand on their shoulders!"
"Why would they want to take away our trees???"
