In the small town of Willowbend, four friends were known for one thing: trouble.
There was Milo, the quick thinker with a knack for “creative” plans. Juno, fearless and always the first to say, “What’s the worst that could happen?” Theo, the quiet one who somehow ended up in the middle of every mess, and Lila, whose curiosity could outmatch a cat’s nine lives.
They didn’t mean to cause chaos — it just seemed to follow them like a shadow.
One summer afternoon, Milo had a “brilliant” plan.
“There’s an old train tunnel past the creek,” he said. “They say it’s haunted. We should check it out.”
Theo frowned. “Or… we could not.”
But Juno was already grabbing her flashlight, and Lila was stuffing snacks into her backpack.
The tunnel was dark, damp, and echoey. Their footsteps sounded as if someone — or something — were following them. Halfway through, they heard a low rumble.
“Uh… is that a ghost?” Theo whispered.
It wasn’t. It was a train.
Panic set in. The tunnel was too narrow to outrun it, but Milo spotted a small maintenance alcove in the wall. They dove in just as the train roared past, wind whipping their hair.
When it was gone, they all burst out laughing — half from relief, half from the thrill.
On the way back, they decided to take a “shortcut” through Old Man Grady’s orchard. Unfortunately, Grady’s geese were on patrol.
The geese charged, hissing like tiny dragons. Lila dropped her snacks, and the geese swarmed them. The friends scrambled up a tree, hearts pounding.
Juno, thinking fast, tossed the rest of the snacks far into the orchard. The geese chased after them, giving the friends just enough time to climb down and sprint for the fence.
By the time they reached town, they were muddy, scratched, and laughing so hard they could barely breathe. But then they saw the “Missing” posters — for a cat named Whiskers.
And there, sitting calmly in Theo’s backpack, was Whiskers.
They returned the cat to its grateful owner, who rewarded them with cookies and lemonade. Somehow, instead of getting in trouble, they ended the day as heroes.
As they sat on Milo’s porch, eating cookies, Juno grinned. “See? We always get into trouble… but we always get out.”
Theo sighed. “Until next time.”
And they all knew there would be a next time.
It had been two weeks since the tunnel, the geese, and the accidental cat rescue. The Trouble Crew — Milo, Juno, Theo, and Lila — were trying to stay out of trouble.
But trouble, as always, found them first.
Willowbend’s annual Lantern Festival was the biggest event of the summer. Hundreds of paper lanterns would be lit and sent drifting into the night sky. This year, the mayor had even promised fireworks.
The night before the festival, the friends were helping set up when they overheard Mrs. Pritchard, the festival organizer, shouting, “They’re gone! All of them! Every single lantern!”
The crew exchanged glances.
Juno grinned. “Looks like we’ve got a case.”
They split up to search the fairgrounds.
Milo found a trail of wax drips leading away from the storage shed.
Lila spotted muddy boot prints near the back fence.
Theo discovered a scrap of red fabric caught on a nail.
Juno… got distracted by free samples at the pie stall.
