The Super-Secrets of New York's Dirt!

Did you know that long before there were roads, schools, or houses, incredible giants ruled New York State? If you could travel back in time, you wouldn’t see a concrete jungle—you would see massive ice sheets, deep swamps, and ancient oceans. Let's look beneath the dirt to find the amazing creatures that used to call New York home!

So much for the silence! Crunch! Tens of thousands of years ago, the American Mastodon walked through the damp forests of New York. Mastodons had special, cone-shaped teeth designed like hedge cutters to crush tough tree branches and shrubs. In fact, a famous mastodon skeleton was discovered right in Cohoes, New York!

Let’s travel even further back, to a time when New York was covered by a warm, shallow ocean! Meet the Eurypterid, also known as the sea scorpion. This is New York's official state fossil! They had powerful, paddle-shaped legs for swimming and sharp claws for catching food. They were the top predators of the ancient New York seas.

How do we know these ancient neighbors existed? Because they left behind clues called fossils! Scientists and everyday people have found mastodon teeth in local bogs and sea scorpion shapes pressed into New York rocks. You can even see their real skeletons today at the New York State Museum in Albany. Ancient history is right under our feet!
