Gargaoon Celebration

Gargaoon is a traditional Ramadan celebration for children, held on the 15th night of the holy month. On this joyful night, children dress up in traditional Bahraini clothes; boys wear the classic Thobe and vest, while girls wear colorful, embroidered Dara'at and Bakhnaq. Carrying traditional cloth bags, they wander through the neighborhood (Al-Farij) knocking on doors and singing their famous traditional chant: 'Gargaoon ahdah alaykum ya assyam... atona Allah yateekum... bayt Makka yowdeekum' (asking for blessings and treats). In return, neighbors warmly welcome them and fill their bags with 'Gargaoon'—a delicious mix of nuts, candies, and traditional sweets

Al-Fraysa Performance

Al-Fraysa is a traditional Bahraini street performance that brings joy to children during Gargaoon celebrations. A performer wears a lightweight horse frame made of wood and fabric around his waist, dancing gracefully in the neighborhood to mimic a real horse. Children happily chase and clap along to the lively beats of traditional Bahraini drums, reflecting the authentic heritage and community spirit of Ramadan.

Ramadan Iftar

During the holy month of Ramadan, families warmly gather around the traditional Sufra, a dining mat beautifully woven from palm fronds. The table is filled with authentic heritage dishes, including dates, Thareed, Harees, alongside savory Bahraini kebabs and sweet Khanfaroosh. Refreshing cold drinks like Vimto and Tang complete the spread, as everyone sits together in a peaceful atmosphere, eagerly waiting for the Maghrib Adhan (call to prayer) to break their day-long fast.

Ramadan Cannon

The Ramadan Cannon is one of the most cherished heritage traditions of the holy month. In the past, it was the primary way to notify people that the fasting day had ended at Maghrib prayer time. Despite modern technological advancements that allow people to easily know the exact prayer times, this beautiful tradition still continues today, as families gather to watch it fire and enjoy its joyful atmosphere.
