One bright spring morning, Amelia, Maeve, Charlotte, and Olivia were arranging fresh loaves at The Girls Coop & Co. when the duck came running down the path.
"Big news!" he quacked.
The hens gathered around.
"The county fair is holding a baking contest next Saturday!"
"A bread contest?" gasped Amelia.
"The biggest one in the county!" said the duck.
The winning baker would receive a shiny blue ribbon and a golden mixing bowl.
"We have to enter!" The hens cheered.

That evening, the hens met in the coop kitchen.
This time, they wanted to bake something different.
"No sourdough loaves," said Olivia.
"We need something special."
After much discussion, they agreed to make a beautiful garden focaccia decorated with vegetables, herbs, and flowers from the farm.
"It will look like a picture you can eat!" said Maeve.
Everyone loved the idea.

As the contest grew closer, they heard about their competition.
Mrs. Poppy Pig was famous for her fluffy rolls.
The Miller Geese baked award-winning pastries.
And everyone whispered about last year's champion...
Benny Bear.
"Benny has won three years in a row," said the goat.
The hens gulped.
Suddenly the contest felt much bigger.

The day before the fair, the hens got to work.
Amelia picked rosemary and thyme.
Maeve gathered edible flowers.
Olivia harvested colorful tomatoes and peppers.
Charlotte carefully grated fresh parmesan cheese.
Soon the dough was ready.
It looked perfect.

As Charlotte carried the bowl of parmesan to the table...
CRASH!
She tripped over the duck's toy wagon.
The entire bowl of parmesan tumbled into the dough.
Every last bit.
The kitchen went silent.
Charlotte stared at the dough.
"Oh no," she whispered.
Tears filled her eyes.
"I ruined everything."

The hens gathered around the bowl.
There was far too much cheese.
"We'll never win now," said Charlotte.
But Amelia gently placed a wing around her friend.
"Everyone makes mistakes."
Maeve nodded.
"We've worked too hard to quit."
Olivia smiled.
"Let's see what happens."
So they mixed the cheese into the dough and hoped for the best.

As the focaccia baked, something wonderful happened.
The cheese melted throughout the dough.
The edges became golden and crispy.
The kitchen filled with the most delicious smell.
The goat poked his head inside.
"What is THAT?"
The duck sniffed the air.
"It smells incredible!"
The hens exchanged hopeful glances.
Maybe the mistake wasn't so bad after all.
