First thing I do in the morning is check my phone.

Gm bestie! Wanna grab brunch instead of the gym this morning?
Gm: This is an example of abbreviation as we turning "Good Morning" into "gm".
Bestie: This shows a derivational process called affixation, where we add the suffix -ie to the word best to create a new affectionate word.
Brunch: This is an example of blending; it combines the words breakfast and lunch into a single new word.
Gym: This is an example of clipping; the word gymnasium has been shortened into the word gym.

Wow, that's a lot of linguistic word formation concepts we have used before even starting our day!
Let's see what else we run into...

café

Hi, Jayme!
Hi, Abby!
Café:
This is an example of borrowing. Borrowing is the process where one language adopts a word or expression from another language and incorporates it into its own vocabulary. English borrowed the term 'café' from French, where it means both 'coffee' and 'coffeehouse'.

I'm actually not too hungry right now. I think I'll just get a latte.
Okay, ditto!
Surprisingly, we have some more great linguistic examples here!
Latte is a borrowed word from the Italian phrase "caffè latte" meaning coffee with milk. In English, we also used the clipping process to shorten "caffè latte" to "latte". If you were to ask for a latte in Italy, you would likely receive a glass of milk.
That is not the only borrowed word in this exchange!
Not many people know that the word "ditto" is also borrowed from the Italian language. The original Italian word detto means "said" or "the same as previously stated." Over time, English speakers adopted it to mean "same here" or "I agree."

Thanks for buying! Are you sure I can't venmo you?
Don't worry about it! See you later!
Venmo is an interesting one! Venmo began as the name of a payment app. Now, people commonly say "I'll Venmo you," turning the brand name into a verb. This process is called conversion, or zero derivation, because the word changes its grammatical function without changing its form!
Additionally, it can sometimes be recognized as a generified word because it is a brand name that has become so widely recognized causing people to use it in everyday language when referring to the action of sending someone money.

After spending time with our bestie, I come back home to work on some homework. I usually grab my laptop and sit on the couch for a while.

Homework and laptop are both examples of compounding! Compounding is the process of creating a new word with its own meaning from two or more existing words (free morphemes).
