In the 1830's Texas was apart of Mexico, Texas was not it's own state yet.

The settlers of Gonzales were given a small cannon by Mexican Authorities for protection. 

Worried that the settlers might rebel, Mexican leaders wanted to take the cannon away from the settlers. mexican soldiers were sent to retrieve the cannon.

For their safety, the settlers of Gonzales did not want to give up the defense cannon.

NO! This is OUR cannon!

The settlers of Gonzales, stood their ground. They made a white flag with a picture of their cannon on it. 

Under the cannon on the flag, are the famous words "come and take it".
