Maui and the Whale

One day Maui was paddling in a waka towards Aoteoroa when he noticed a nui whale swimming towards him. It was a pouring night and he couldn’t see clearly.

He tried to avoid the whale by paddling away but the whale had other ideas. Suddenly, the whale dived underneath the waka and surfaced again underneath Maui. Maui tried to get off the whale which had come up and lifted Maui and the canoe out of the water, onto the whale's back. 

After many hours the whale arrived at an island and launched the waka off of the whales back. After Maui got up he realised the whale was stuck on the beach.
