It is first day of first grade. Jasmine loves art, building blocks, and playing pretend. Jasmine does not use spoken words. Instead, she uses an AAC device to communicate.

Jasmine uses her AAC device to tell others what she wants, needs, or is thinking.

With a tap, she can say "hello" and "I want to play."

She always has her words with her.

One morning, the teacher, Ms. Taylor, announced, "Today, we are going to build a city together!"

The children exclaimed in excitement.

"I'll build the house," said Sam.

"I'm going to make the roads," said Sarah.

Maya reached for her AAC device.

Jasmine had an idea.

She wanted to build a park for their city.

"I have an idea!" she said with her AAC device.

But the classroom was too noisy.

No one heard her.

Jasmine tried again. She pointed at the blocks and tapped her device. "Park!"

Sam looked at her. "I don't know what you mean," he said.

Jasmine's smiled disappeared.

Ms. Taylor noticed. She walked over and said, "Sometimes we need to slow down and give our friends time to communicate.

She looked at Jasmine and wait. Jasmine looked at her device and tapped, "Park."

Ms. Taylor smiled. "You want to build a park?"

Jasmine nodded.

Ava's eye grew wide. "Oh! I want to help!"

Ava sat next to Jasmine.

"What should we put in the park?" Ava asked Jasmine. Maya thought for a moment and then she tapped, "trees" and "swings."
