Long ago, George Washington lived in Virginia. Virginia was one of the first 13 American colonies. George grew up near rivers, fields, and trees.

George Washington loved dogs and had several of them, 50 to be exact! He was very tall, and he loved horses and riding them. Imagine having a happy dog by your side as you ride through the countryside.

George married Martha, and they made a family together. Martha already had two children, Jacky and Patsy, from her first marriage. George did not have children of his own, but treated them as they were his. They were a very important part of his life!
George learned to work hard and take responsibility. As a young man, he became a soldier. People saw that he could lead others. He also learned about the land and how to make careful plans. These skills helped prepare him for the challenges ahead.

The American colonies wanted to lead themselves. They fought a war against Great Britian. George became a general in the Continental Army. The soldiers came from many colonies and worked together. They hoped to build a country where they could make their own choices.

George led soldiers through a long, difficult war. They faced cold days, little food, and many challenges. His leadership helped the colonies win their freedom. The soldiers kept going, even when times were hard. At last, the colonies became an independent country.

After the war, the new nation needed a new government. People chose George Washington to be the first president of the United States! He began serving in 1789. Many people trusted him to help guide the country. George took this important job seriously.

This is the actual letter telling George about the people wanting him to be president!

As president, George helped the new government get started. He worked with other leaders to guide the country. Being the first president was a big responsibility. He made choices about how the government would work. George helped set a path for leaders who came after him.
