The Beginning of My Life

My name is Martin Luther King Jr. I was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia.

I grew up in a loving family with my parents, my older sister, and my younger brother.

My father was a preacher. As a young boy I loved learning and spending time with my family. Little me had no idea the impact my words would have all around the world.

                            Growing Up

As I grew older I noticed that I got treated differently because of the color of my skin. This was called segregation.

Black children and white children attended different schools, could not drink from the same fountain or sit in the same places. I knew I wanted my life to be different. I believed everyone deserved to be treated equally.

                             My Education

My education was very important to me. I attended Morehouse College in Atlanta. I studied religion and became a minister.

I married my lovely wife while studying. Her name was Coretta Scott. We fell in love and got married in 1953.

                               My Family

Coretta and I had four children: Yolanda, Martin Luther King III, Dexter and Bernice.

                        Changing History

I was chosen to help lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which started in 1955. It was a peacful protest where black residents refused to ride city buses to protest against segregation.

In December 1956, the buses were desegregated.
