Once upon a time, there was a bright third-grader named Elena. Elena loved talking with her friends and telling fanciful stories during recess.

But when the clock struck ten each morning, it was time for independent reading. That was when Elena’s heart would beat fast with worry.

Elena did not have Accuracy and Automaticity. This meant she could not read the words correctly or quickly. Instead, every single word felt like a big heavy boulder blocking her path.

Because she spent all her energy trying to break apart individual letters, her reading Tempo became incredibly slow and choppy. It sounded just like a little robot running out of batteries.

By the time Elena reached the end, her mind was exhausted. She had no idea what the story was actually about. Her Comprehension was entirely missing. She worked so hard on sounding out the pieces that she missed the magic of the tale. To Elena, reading did not feel like a grand adventure. It just felt like a stressful test.

?

The teacher decided to build a special learning bridge. She set up three Supporting Fluency Strategies to help Elena feel safe and successful.
The real fun began when the teacher started Choral Reading with Elena's small group. This strategy eliminated the scary spotlight of reading all alone. Elena’s voice was safely wrapped in the warm sound of all her classmates reading at the same time.
Elena naturally began to match their Tempo and phrasing. If she ran into a tricky word, she did not have to stop and cry. She could just listen to her friends, fix it in her mind, and keep moving right along. This group practice taught her brain to read in smooth sentences instead of broken pieces.
