Hailey was a second grader who loved drawing and playing with her friends. Every morning, she walked into her classroom excited to learn something new!

One Monday, a new student named Jack joined the class. He sat quietly at his desk, while everyone else talked. Jack wanted to make friends, but he was feeling nervous.

Hailey noticed that Jack was sitting alone. She remembered how it felt to be nervous in a new place. She wondered, “What can I do to make him feel welcomed?”

Hailey walked over and said, “Hi Jack, my name is Hailey! Would you like to sit with me?” Jack smiled. Her friendly words helped him feel welcomed.

At recess, Hailey invited Jack to play with her friends. “There is room for everyone!” She said. Jack felt a part of the group as he played with them.

Later that day, a student named Henry accidentally dropped some books he was carrying. He looked embarrassed, because everyone was waiting to go to lunch.

Hailey and Jack hurried over to help Henry. They picked up the books and handed them to Henry. Henry said, “Thank you!”

The next morning, their teacher announced, “This week, our class has a kindness challenge! Let’s look for ways to help others feel safe and included.”
