A Girl who Loved Numbers
Maya was a curious little girl who loved exploring the world. She especially loved numbers! She counted the steps to her bedroom, the flowers in her garden, and the cookies on her plate.
Maya believed that numbers could help her solve almost any problem.
A Mysterious Letter
One sunny morning, Maya discovered a letter underneath her front door. It read, “Dear Maya, a special treasure is hidden somewhere in our town! To find it, you must solve the math puzzles along the way. Are you ready for an adventure?”
Maya grabbed her backpack, a pencil, and her notebook. “Come on, Let's Go!"
The First Clue
Her first stop was Sweet Treats Bakery. The baker smiled and pointed to a chalkboard.
“To earn your next clue, tell me how many cupcakes I have if I bake three chocolate cupcakes and five vanilla cupcakes.”
Maya thought carefully. She counted three chocolate cupcakes, then five vanilla cupcakes.
“Three plus five equals eight!” she announced.
“Wonderful!” said the baker. “Here is your next clue!”
The Pattern in the Park
The next clue led Maya to the park. A wooden sign showed a red circle, a blue triangle, another red circle, and another blue triangle.
Maya tilted her head. “Something is repeating!”
The sign asked, “What shape comes next?”
Maya smiled. “A red circle! The pattern goes circle, triangle, circle, triangle.”
The sign opened a little compartment containing another clue.
Crossing the Bridge
Maya reached a wooden bridge. Before she could cross, she had to arrange four number cards from least to greatest.
The cards showed 12, 5, 8, and 11.
Maya lined them up carefully: 5, 8, 11, 12.
“Five is the smallest number, and twelve is the largest!” she explained.
The bridge creaked open, and Maya continued down the trail.
The Ducks at the Pond
At the pond, Maya counted ten ducks swimming happily in the water. Suddenly, four ducks waddled onto the grass to eat some crumbs.
A sign beside the pond asked, “How many ducks are still swimming?”
Maya counted backward from ten. “Ten minus four equals six!”
Six ducks were still swimming. Maya squealed happily as the ducks splashed in the pond.
